UFC 236: Is a Holloway and Adesanya Parlay A Good Bet?

UFC 236: Is a Holloway and Adesanya Parlay A Good Bet?
UFC 236, billed at Holloway vs. Poirier 2, takes place on April 13th, 2019 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia and sees the UFC Lightweight Championship bout between Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier headline the event. Poirier won the previous fight between the two, but the UFC betting odds suggest Holloway is a massive favorite.

UFC 236 sees six fights scheduled although MMA fans’ attention will be focused in the Interim UFC Lightweight Championship bout between Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier and the Interim UFC Middleweight Championship fight between Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya.

  • Max Holloway is a -250 favorite to retain his title
  • Dustin Poirier has odds of +195 to repeat his victory over Max Holloway
  • Holloway is moving up weight for the first time in career to take on Poirier
  • Isreal Adesanya goes into his fight as a substantial -205 favorite despite being ranked one place below his opponent Kelvin Gastelum
  • Adesanya has never been defeated in 16 fights

Max Holloway is a Favorite Despite Moving up in Weight

Max Holloway has faced Dustin Poirier once before in the featherweight division back at UFC 143 and he will be hoping there is not a repeat perfomance because Holloway lost to a first round submission. The current UFC odds on Bovada do not suggest history will repeat itself as the online bookmaker prices Holloway as a substantial -250 favorite to win his first ever fight in the Lightweight class.

Holloway boasts of a 20-3 record and after dominating 13 opponents in a row while at featherweight is moving up to 155 pounds to once again take on Poirier in a much anticipated grudge match. Holloway has a fantastic reputation and is chasing the top of the pound-for-pound rankings. He will join the likes of Conor McGregor, Amanda Nunes and Daniel Cormier as the only UFC athletes to hold two UFC belts at the same time.

It should be an intriguing fight despite the UFC 236 odds suggesting Holloway will win this fight comfortably. Holloway may have finished some of UFC’s great featherweight fighters during his career to date, including Jose Aldo twice and former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, but Poirier is no slouch and knows his way around the octagon.

Poirier may have a slight psychological edge over Holloway as it was he who inflicted Holloway’s first defeat as a professional UFC athlete during UFC 143. Poirier, who boasts of a 24-5 1NC record, has only been defeated once in four years and his last four victories have all earned him post-fight bonuses.

The man fighting out of Coconut Creek, Florida has a reputation for being one of the most dangerous and entertaining athletes in the lightweight division and will be confident of stopping Holloway in his tracks and proving their 2012 contest was no fluke.

Kelvin Gastelum Hoping to Cause an Upset

Kelvin Gastelum is set to compete for the first UFC title of his career when he steps into the octagon with undefeated Israel Adesanya on April 13th. Gastelum was all set to take on current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 234 but Whittaker withdrew due to illness and did so at short notice.

Gastelum’s UFC 236 odds price him as the +165 outsider, although the man who is fighting out of Yuma, Arizona is confident he can defy those odds and prove he is one of the best fighters in the division. Gastelum’s previous two fights have resulted in impressive wins for him. He made short work of number three ranked contender Jacare Souza and former middleweight champion Michael Bisping, but will this latest fight prove too much for him?

Israel Adesanya from Auckland, New Zealand looks to have what it takes to become a UFC superstar. His first 16 professional bouts have all ended in victory and he is now competing for his first belt only a year after joining the promotion.

Adesanya was a multiple-time kickboxing champion who reportedly enjoyed a 75-4 record and those kickboxing skills come in handy in the octagon, with 13 of his 16 fights ending in a knockout! Adesanya is fresh off beating UFC legend Anderson Silva and is looking to become the first ever fighter to knockout Gastelum.

Which UFC 236 Bets Should You Make?

The two favorites for the Main Events of UFC 236 are short priced with Holloway coming in at -250 and Adesanya’s UFC betting odds being -205. Despite the gulf in the UFC odds, the fights could be much closer and both underdogs are capable of causing an upset.

A $50 wager on Holloway to win would currently yield $20 profit, with the same $50 wager on Poirier netting you $97.50. In the other bout, using the same $50 wager as in the previous example, betting on Adesanya wins you $24.39 and $82.50 of Gastelum wins.

Bookmakers rarely get their odds wrong, or if they do it is not by a large margin. This leads us to look at a parlay bet on the two favorites, Holloway and Adesanya. Wagering a $50 parlay on this selection would bank you a nice profit of $54.15. Should you think both underdogs will come out as winners, the same $50 parlay wager would see your betting bankroll swell by a massive $340.88!
