Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz: Must Win Fight For Joshua

Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz: Must Win Fight For Joshua

The boxing world is preparing for one of the biggest fights in the sport’s history when Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr step into the ring in Saudi Arabia for their much-anticipated rematch. It’s a must-win fight for Joshua but can he get the job done?

Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr step into the ring again for a rematch where the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles are on the line. Saudi Arabia is going to be packed with boxing fans from around the world and the current Anthony Joshua odds of -250 suggest the British star will regain his titles.

  • Anthony Joshua is the -250 favorite to win this fight
  • Reigning champion Andy Ruiz Jr has +195 odds to win this bout
  • Ruiz Jr has lost more than 8lbs in preparation for this fight
  • Ruiz Jr causes a massive upset when he defeated Joshua back in June when Ruiz was a +1200 underdog.

Joshua vs Ruiz Jr: The First Battle

It was a major upset back in June when Anthony Joshua lost his unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO championship belts to Andy Ruiz Jr.

Some bookmakers priced Andy Ruiz odds at +1200 before that fight, but even Bovada, where you can claim a $250 bonus, now only make him a +250 underdog.

Joshua was set to face Jarrell Miller but Miller failed three drugs tests and was forced to withdraw from the battle. Ruiz Jr was called into action despite only fighting on April 20. That was against Alexander Dimitrenko who Ruiz Jr defeated in the fifth round by TKO.

People thought the Joshua vs Ruiz Jr fight would be a one-sided affair with the fitter, stronger Joshua heavily backed with online sportsbooks. Joshua had a four inch height advantage, weighed almost 21lbs less and was in much better shape than Ruiz Jr who looked fat.

Despite being overweight, Ruiz Jr possesses incredible punching speed and this rattled Joshua early on. Joshua knocked down Ruiz Jr early in the third round and the writing looked to be on the wall. Ruiz rose to his feet and sent Joshua to the canvas.

Joshua also got back to his feet but did not respond like Ruiz, instead adopting a defensive style. Ruiz Jr found a way through and knocked Joshua on the floor again at the end of the third round, resulting in the champion taking a mandatory eight-count.

Round seven is when Joshua’s world came crashing down and why this latest fight sees the Anthony Joshua vs Ruiz odds much closer than the first fight. Ruiz jr floored Joshua again, a fourth time in the fight towards the end of Round 7.

Joshua spat out his mouthguard, turned his back on the referee and headed to his corner, seemingly uninterested in continuing. His responses to the official’s questions were deemed insufficient and the referee called an end to the fight.

Two judges had Ruiz Jr leading the fight, with the third stating Joshua was ahead. Ruiz Jr became the first-ever Hispanic heavyweight champion in boxing history and netted a reported $7 million purse.

Joshua Has To Win

Before the first fight with Ruiz Jr, all the talk was of Joshua fighting Deontay Wilder before a massive pay-per-view clash with fellow Brit Tyson Fury. Industry experts believe Joshua’s career is finished if he loses to Ruiz Jr for a second time.

Is that likely? It is hard to say. Ruiz Jr certainly has the speed and power to hurt Joshua, as shown in the previous contest. But, Joshua is technically the better boxer and his lethal jab can be used to keep Ruiz at bay. Ruiz Jr is going to want a slugging match close up so Joshua needs to use his reach and height advantage to keep him at bay.

Both Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko suffered similar upsets in their careers and came back stronger. Joshua needs to do the same.

Ruiz vs Joshua odds of +190 and -250 respectively suggest punters and sportsbooks think Joshua will be returning to England with his world titles. We think the same. There is no way Joshua will underestimate his opponent this time around, something he obviously did last time around.

Ruiz Jr’s only defeat on his record came against New Zealand’s Joseph Parker. Joshua beat Parker by a landslide points margin and can do the same in this high-pressure rematch. Joshua is an intelligent boxer and will rely on his technical ability to win this fight, possibly on points, after outboxing Ruiz Jr.

The best Ruiz Jr can hope for is to avoid Joshua’s power for the first three rounds because if Joshua manages to soften him up, Joshua could finish the fight in true style and with what would be his 22nd knockout from 23 victories.

Help yourself to a welcome bonus from one of the leading online sportsbooks and put that money on a Joshua victory. He has too much to lose to not win this fight.

Pick: Anthony Joshua to win at -250
