Horse Racing Weekly Picks: The Remsen Stakes
For clarity’s sake, I’d like to keep my betting focus here solely on the Grade 2 Remsen, which is always an interesting event for two year-olds stretching out to a mile and an eighth on the outer dirt course at the Big A.
When I look at the 2018 renewal of the Remsen, here are my five big takeaways:
- Network Effect (7/5) and Maximus Mischief (6/5) are much faster than this group on speed figures
- Maximus Mischief (94 and 98 Beyer Speed Figures in first two starts) will be running around two turns for the first time
- Network Effect has home track advantage and will get first run at Maximus should he come back to the field
- 15/1 shot Gladiator King could make thins uncomfortable for Maximus on the front end
- Several runners in this field are simply too slow to be taken seriously
Picks and preview
With just seven runners signed on and the likelihood of a short-priced winner, you might wonder why I’m focusing on this event. The answer is that I’m intrigued by the talent and potential of the top two runners, but I’m also intrigued by making a cold-blooded stab at singling this race as part of a rolling double (I like Copper Town in the subsequent race, the Cigar Mile).
Maximus Mischief has run extraordinarily fast for a juvenile in two starts at Parx, but he’s not particularly well bred to race beyond a mile, and trainer Robert Reid (19% overall) connects with just 7% of his starters going sprint to route. Those are bad signs, and so is the presence of other speed in this race.
In addition to Network Effect, Bourbon War is another interesting possibility should he improve on his first–out win (74 Beyer) going a mile at Aqueduct against maiden special weight company.
I’ll ride with Network Effect here as he has a few things going for him. He’s raced well over the track, and he’s already been two turns. In addition, he’ll be going second off the 45-180-day layoff for trainer Chad Brown, who wins at an elite 25% clip with that move. Jockey Javier Castellano fits this horse like a glove and should be able to push the button at the right time to make a winning bid for the wire.
Bets and combos
There may not be any longshots to get terribly excited about Saturday, but I like my cold-punch in the double covering the Remsen/Cigar Mile (Races 8-9). Give me the 5-horse in both races (Network Effect in race 8 with Copper Town in race 9).
