An electric event, the 2024 Wimbledon Championships are already underway and the men’s singles side should see another fantastic finish. Last year, Carlos Alcaraz was able to take home the gentlemen’s singles tennis title with an amazing victory over the legendary Novak Djokovic in the final. This year, both men are again among the favorites to again take home the championship as the tournament enters its latter stages. Djokovic is aiming to tie Roger Federer’s all-time record of eight Wimbledon men’s singles titles if he can seal the deal. That all said, the man to beat per some betting markets is actually No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner who has been tabbed by some outlets as the overall favorite. This is thanks to his fantastic play as of late in each Grand Slam tournament this year, including winning the 2024 Australian Open.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from the remaining top contenders at Wimbledon, a selected winner, and also some more notes about tennis wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Jannik Sinner (Odds: +170)

Sinner enters the quarterfinals as perhaps the hottest player in tennis thanks to his consistently strong play this year. During this tournament, the Italian player has mostly blown past the competition, winning his first two match-ups in three out of four sets, and then sweeping in straight sets his last two competitors. Known for his aggressive baseline play, the Italian athlete is a fantastic player and known for generating huge racket head speed, allowing him to hit the shot at over 100m mph on occasion. This year alone, he won four different titles in eight tournament appearances. This matches his previous best of four wins in one season and has showcased how he can be a dominant threat to his opponents once he gets going. Perhaps he has also ascended to the next level after knocking on the door the last couple of years.

The No. 2 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +225)

A familiar face in these rankings, Alcaraz of course is one of the most dominant stars in all of tennis and aiming for a repeat here at Wimbledon. A three-time Grand Slam winner, the Spaniard broke through in 2022 with a win in the U.S. Open and has never looked back. Currently rated as the No.3 player in the world, he has locked down fourteen ATP Tour-level singles titles including his aforementioned three major titles. During this tournament, he has breezed past most of his opponents, though he did have a tough battle with Frances Tiafoe in the third round of this year’s Wimbledon. He is certainly a championship favorite if he can sustain his very high level of play.

Third Ranked Athlete: Novak Djokovic (Odds: +400)

In many ways, the greatest tennis player of all time, the Joker enters the latter stages of this tournament aiming for history. As noted above, if he can pull off the win in England, he will have equaled Roger Federer’s all-time mark for most wins ever at Wimbledon and also extend his record of Grand Slam men’s singles titles which currently sits at 24. In his career to date, he has won 98 singles titles, including a record 71 “Big Titles” which includes the 24 majors, 40 Masters, and a record seven ATP Finals. During this year’s tournament, he started the event with a sweep, and then progressed with his usual dominant fashion heading into the quarterfinals.

Final contender spotlight: Alexander Zverev (Odds: +750)

An athlete who has been ranked as high as the number two player in the world Zverev’s career highlights include a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics along with titles at the 2018 and 2021 ATP Finals. Moreover, he has notched an impressive 22 ATP Tour titles in singles action. During this tournament, he has looked very impressive, with straight-set wins in his first three rounds of play. Of course, his last matchup against Cameron Norrie was a bit more contested, but Zverev was able to outlast him heading into a showdown against Taylor Fritz.
