The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup gets underway in Australia and New Zealand this week. This is the ninth edition of the competition, and in our latest soccer betting picks, we’re going to tell you who the best nations are to put your money on.
This is a groundbreaking competition for women’s soccer. For the first time in the tournament’s history, there will be 32 teams taking place, replicating the men’s World Cup. And it will also be the first-ever Women’s World Cup to be co-hosted, with Australia and New Zealand both staging matches.
The favorites to win the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup are the US Women’s team. Also commonly referred to as the USWNT, the US is +250 to defend the title with the best world cup betting sites.

The defending champions and the betting favorites are the US Women’s team. The USWNT has dominated this competition since its inception in 1991, winning it on a record four occasions in 1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019.
Further still, the US has dominated the most recent editions. Two of their four wins have come in the last two World Cups, meaning they are going for the three-peat when the competition gets going later this week.
Vlatko Andonovski is the current head coach. Andonovski took over from Jill Ellis, who coached the USWNT to their previous two wins in 2015 and 2019.
Andonovski was a well-known figure in the women’s game in the USA before taking the role. His previous spells coaching FC Kansas City and Reign FC in the NWSL were both successful. And when he was announced as the new head coach of the USWNT in 2019, it was a welcomed appointment.
Although Vlatko Andonovski is an experienced head coach, he will never have experienced anything like what is coming in the next four weeks. This is his first World Cup as a head coach, and he will be under immense pressure to deliver for an American public expecting, not hoping, he can bring back the trophy for the third time in succession.

From across the pond, the two greatest threats to the US Women’s attempts to win the World Cup for a third time come from England and Spain.
Sarina Wiegman’s England team are the current UEFA Women’s Championship holders. Wieigman also coached her native Netherlands to the same title in 2017.
And if Wiegman’s credentials need any further recommendations, she holds the Best FIFA Women’s Coach award, which she also won in 2017 and 2020.
As well as having one of the world’s top coaches, the England squad has talent throughout. And their win in the 2022 Euros will have given them the self-belief that they can finally win FIFA’s top competition.
A negative for the English is the injuries to captain Leah Williamson, Fran Kirby, and Beth Mead. All three played important roles in winning UEFA Euro 2022. And all three will be badly missed by England in Australia and New Zealand.
As for the Spanish, they are arguably the most talented group of women assembled at the 2023 FIFA World Cup. Spain narrowly lost to England in UEFA Euro 2022 at the quarter-final stage. It was a match that pundits thought they were the better side in.
After their elimination from the event, there was a mutiny in the Spanish camp, with 15 senior players demanding change at the top. This caused a massive split among the players, but the Spanish FA opted to stick with head coach Jorge Vilda.
There has since been a reconciliation of sorts, and three of the 15 rebels, Aitana Bonmatí, Mariona Caldentey, and Ona Batlle, are in the World Cup squad. Joining them in Australia and New Zealand will be 2022 Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who is returning from a long injury layoff.
The Spanish are a talented group. But after last year’s mutiny, there are questions about team harmony.
The USWNT are the favorites, but they’re not as clear-cut favorites as they have previously been. The English and the Spanish have closed the gap on the US Women, but are they close enough to prevent the US from winning a third successive FIFA World Cup?
