Set to kick off in earnest this week in London, the 2023 Wimbledon Championship features an explosive women’s bracket with multiple favorites. Elena Rybakina is the defending champion after winning the 2022 Wimbledon title, defeating Ons Jabeur in three sets to secure her first major title. In addition to Rybakina, Iga Świątek and Aryna Sabalenka are duking it out to see who will be acknowledged as the new WTA No. 1 singles player in the world. If the former slips up prior to the quarterfinals and the latter advances to the final round, then there will also be a new No. 1 player in the world. Finally, two-time Grand Slam winner Petra Kvitová has been recognized by some outlets as a dark horse favorite to make some noise at Wimbledon.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these athletes along with more notes and information about wagering on tennis.

The No. 1 Contender: Iga Swiatek (Odds: +300)

As noted above, the 2023 French Open champion is not only looking to keep her place atop the charts as the best player in the world, but also lock down her first Wimbledon title. At only 22 years of age, Świątek is now a four-time Grand Slam champion and is tennis’ permanent star on the women’s side of the sport. While she has struggled at Wimbledon in the past, never advancing past the fourth round, she has accrued an impressive record of 10-1 in Grand Slam tournaments this year.

Another player with a very aggressive style of play, Sabalenka has showcased the ability to accumulate a high number of winners and unforced errors. She has struggled though at Wimbledon, posting a career-record of 6-4, but she did notch a semi-final appearance in her last outing in 2021.
