Another week of excellent college basketball action is slated for this week, as teams are looking for separation in the super competitive Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In SBS’ first matchup spotlight, Wake Forest travels to Tallahassee for a showdown with Florida State. The 11-3 Demon Deacons are coming off a thrilling double-overtime win against Miami, while the Seminoles are also doing well, winners of back-to-back conference games to start 2024. Meanwhile, Notre Dame is set to take on Georgia Tech on the road. This contest features two teams that are looking to sort some things out as the Irish sit at 6-9 on the season and riding a two-game losing streak. Meanwhile, after an 8-3 start, the Yellow Jackets have run into some tough competition and are looking to snap their three-game losing skid in this matchup against Notre Dame.

In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each squad, picking a predicted winner in each game, and also sharing some more thoughts and notes about NCAAB wagering.

NCAA Basketball Game One Overview

Team Spotlight: Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Wake Forest features one of the conference’s top scorers in Hunter Sallis who averages approx. 18.4 points per game (ppg). The guard also does an excellent job of being efficient with the basketball, scoring with a 47.3 field goal percentage. Moreover, the Demon Deacons have a nice post presence in Andrew Carr who leads the team in rebounds with 7.6 rpg. However, in the squad’s last contest against the Hurricanes, guard Kevin Willer was the star of the show, scoring 27 points in the rousing win over Miami.

In terms of team production, Wake Forest does a great job of scoring (81.9 ppg) and also limiting their opponents as well (69.6). Moreover, the Demon Deacons have an advantage in this contest, in overall NET rankings, being recognized as the 47th best team in the NET vs. 118th for Florida State

Team Spotlight: Florida State Seminoles

The Seminoles counter the Demon Deacons with forward Jamir Watkins who not only leads the squad in scoring at 12.6 ppg but also is the team leader in rebounds (6.3) and assists (3 apg). Indeed he is a versatile enough presence that can meld the game to his liking if things start going that way for Florida State. The Seminoles as a whole though have been playing on the edge this year, as showcased by their team points per game (76.6 ppg) to what they allow per contest (73.6).

However, Florida State does hold an advantage over Wake Forest in a couple of different categories like team rebounding, assists, and steals (FSU averages 9.1 per contest). Florida State does have some standout wins this year as well, in addition to their 2-0 conference record, they have beaten the likes of UNLV and then No. 18-ranked Colorado

Prediction: Winners of nine straight games, Wake Forest will continue their hot streak with a tough road win over the Seminoles.

NCAA Basketball Game Two Overview

Team Spotlight: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

A squad that has just a 1-3 record in conference play, the Irish enter this game looking for a boost and a nice road win in the ACC. Notre Dame is led by guard Markus Burton who is their leading scorer at 16.2 ppg and also in assists at 3.9 apg. While the Irish did clobber Virginia, 76-54, right before the end of 2023, the Yellow Jackets pose a stiffer challenge on the road. Moreover, this will be Notre Dame’s first road game since December 9th against Marquette. While the Irish are tough, they need a nice bounce-back win here.

Team Spotlight: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

After starting the season with a record of 8-3, the Yellow Jackets have also been on the skids since losing to Nevada at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Christmas Eve. Georgia Tech was winning for a majority of their last contest, a home matchup against Boston College. While the  Yellow Jackets fell short, 95-87, Damon Stoudamire’s squad is due for a win, especially given the advantage in NET rankings (125 to 171) for Georgia Tech.

Prediction: Another close battle, take the Yellow Jackets to get right here at home against Notre Dame
