In Trump’s first term, from 2017 to 2021, international approval ratings of U.S. leadership dropped about 22 percent in a Gallup poll. Additionally, this was lower than China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin – in a Pew Research Poll. Going off the same research poll from Pew, a year into his second administration, Americans’ views of President Donald Trump – “already more negative than positive” – have continued to slip. Trump’s approval rating stands at 37%, down from 40% in the fall. Additionally, by more than two-to-one, the report notes, Americans say the administration’s actions have been worse than they expected (50%) rather than better (21%).
Prediction: Covered in the same article, only about a quarter of Americans today (27%) say they support all or most of Trump’s policies and plans, down from 35% when he returned to office last year. So even with that in mind, but given his volatility, SBS could see his approval rating move back up by March 1st over 40.5%. This is further bolstered by his second-term average standing at 41%.
Covered in another source, last year, Trump threatened the annexation of Greenland, including by military force or the imposition of tariffs on European allies. Then in January of this year, he appeared to withdraw both threats, stating that he had “reached the framework of a future deal with NATO.” Trump had unsuccessfully tried to purchase Greenland during his first presidency. Then, Greenland and Denmark ruled out any deal altering the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark, with Trump’s comments referring to pre-existing commitments from a 1951 US-Denmark treaty.
Prediction: With so many uncertain factors abounding in this scenario, it would appear that a purchase of Greenland is not imminent. In addition to tepid support of this plan in the United States (a YouGov poll found only 8% of Americans supported an invasion of Greenland, with 73% opposed), a purchase does not seem to be happening soon. In any case, should this happen, over $1.5 trillion seems to be a healthy number in this interesting scenario.
As the incumbent president, Trump is ineligible for a third term, as the term limits imposed by the Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibit presidents from being elected more than twice. In any case, there have been times of speculation where the current sitting president would override this system and go for a third term. The more likely scenario, per some betting outlets, is current vice president JD Vance running for the top office spot once Trump’s term is over in 2028.
Prediction: Reported at -1500 on a betting sportsbook, this seems like a far-off idea, even if Trump supporters feel as though it is very likely. So, the prediction here is no.
Similar to the other betting market above, perhaps this would be one of the crowning achievements of Trump’s second term in acquiring Greenland prior to his leaving office. Of course, this is also somewhat of a bigger hurdle given the headwinds not only from Denmark and Greenland, but also inside the United States. However, this has not stopped the president before from forging his own path, so it could conceivably happen given his executive authority and power.
Prediction: Another strong “No” at -900, Trump will have to broker multiple deals, albeit he is an expert at doing so, to make this deal in acquiring Greenland happen. In any case, the prediction here is also “No,” but you never know with President Trump.
