For Texas gaming enthusiasts, the wait for overall state legalization might have to wait a little longer. Per a recent national report, efforts to legalize casino gambling in Texas have failed in recent legislative sessions, but the industry is not giving up. In an interview with the national outlet located in Texas in Fort Worth, Gov. Greg Abbott said he is not ready to support the idea of changing the Texas Constitution to legalize casino gambling. “I’m not there yet. I am simply not there yet,” Abbott told the national outlet in Texas.

In this article, SBS will be going over the latest gaming updates coming from the Lone Star State, along with a variety of other excellent notes and insights you can find only at SBS.

When asked why not (regarding gaming legalization), Abbot said, “Because we have seen increasingly problems that go along with gaming. Whether it be addiction or whether it be things that are happening in sporting events and athletes who are on the take,” the Governor said in the same article. “And so, there have been more red flags raised. That caused us to have to pause, step back, take a look at this, and make sure we would not do anything that would be harmful, either in the state of Texas, or in the culture that we have in the state, or to sporting events that we have in the state.”

Under the previous legislation that failed at the Texas Capitol, the state would have allowed a limited number of resorts to be built that featured casino gambling in and around Dallas and Houston. In order for that to get the green light, a supermajority of lawmakers in the Texas House and Senate would need to approve amending the state constitution before sending it to the voters.

Las Vegas Sands continues casino gaming push

In the same vein as above, a major gaming power is continuing to push lawmakers in the state regarding casino gaming, even with uncertainty abounding. Per another major news source, Las Vegas Sands is eyeing a multibillion-dollar destination resort in North Texas, but first, the company must convince lawmakers to expand gambling in the state, as regular readers of this space are aware. For this proposed new resort, the space would mirror another existing Sands property: the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. Standing more than 55 stories tall and overlooking Marina Bay, the Sands resort and casino is among the best-known in the world. Inside, an underground mall features 270 shops and restaurants, including the Dallas Safe and Bar.

Above the mall, the property houses 1,850 hotel rooms, the SkyPark, and one of the highest infinity pools in the world. About 100,000 people visit the resort daily. What keeps the operation running is a five-story underground complex known as the “heart of the house,” where 12,000 employees clock in, change into uniforms that are tracked and washed daily, and move throughout the resort. One of the newest additions to the underground facility is a fleet of robotic carts that move supplies around the property, monitored by a logistics center and maintained by dedicated teams. Las Vegas Sands representatives say they hope to bring a similar experience to Texas. That is, if they can win over lawmakers and also the local community in the state.

Two arrested in raid on illegal Rockport gaming operation

In other Texas gaming news, authorities raided an illegal gambling operation in South Texas in early December. This included arresting two people and seizing gaming devices and cash following a months-long investigation into counterfeit money, drug sales, and gambling complaints, the article noted. A joint search warrant was executed at Quick Easy Game Room, located at 1425 Business 35 South, involving various law enforcement agencies. This includes the Rockport Police Department, Aransas Pass Police Department, Texas Comptroller’s Office, and Homeland Security Investigations. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission assisted in the probe as well.

Ganaesh Kumar Jaladi was arrested on charges of engaging in organized criminal activity and illegal gambling. Patrick Daniel Thauburn, who authorities said was not affiliated with the game room but was present during the raid, was arrested on charges of manufacturing or delivering a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1-B, between four grams and 200 grams. Bonds were set at $50,000. Warrants have been issued for five other individuals who were not at the scene. Additionally, investigators confiscated more than 20 gaming devices, over $2,800 in cash, records, and servers as evidence. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities reviewing seized items for additional leads.
