Tennis: US Open 2022 details

Tournament favorites

Daniil Medvedev – (+240)

The player who earned the right to be the favorite is Medvedev, who will have a fresh set of legs after being forced to sit out of Wimbledon due to circumstances out of his control when they banned Russian and Belarusian players following the invasion of Ukraine.

The reigning and defending US Open champion will look to repeat and fight off some tough competition, but he’s had a relatively good year so far.

He won his first competition of the year a few weeks ago when he defeated Cameron Norrie at the Los Cabos Open, and that, along with his performances this year, has seen him ranked at number one in the world since February. He’s 32-10 for the calendar year.

He’ll be well rested and will have a point to prove, and has already progressed into the second round with a win on an opening day in straight sets against Stefan Kozlov, where he won 6-2 6-4 and 6-0. He looks sharp.

With the form and his record at the tournament in the past, it’s impossible to look past him too quickly.

Carlos Alcaraz – (+500)

It isn’t easy to gauge Alcaraz’s chances at Flushing Meadows, but Alcaraz is a top talent in the tennis world and should never be ruled out of winning a competition again, considering the amazing abilities he has.

Alcaraz will take on Sebastian Baez in the opening round of the tournament on Tuesday, having made it through to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open earlier this month, where he was beaten in three sets by eventual semi-finalist Cameron Norrie.

Though Alcaraz has proven that he can beat the best in the world with wins over Nadal and Djokovic in consecutive matches in Madrid earlier this year, winning a grand slam is an entirely different prospect, and he will have to be at his very best throughout the two-week period.

While we do not expect Alcaraz to claim the title, it wouldn’t be the biggest shock of the tournament by any stretch, and if he plays to his best, he could well be an excellent value bet at this early stage.

Rafael Nadal – (+400)

Nadal has been around the block for quite some time, and there was doubt that he’d even make it to this tournament after being forced to withdraw from Wimbledon at the semi-final stage due to an abdominal tear.

The primary issue with him comes from a physical standpoint, as he’s 36, and his body has proven problematic from time to time.

Despite winning the French Open and Australian Open already this year and getting to the semi-finals of Wimbledon before injury cost him, there seems to be crazily doubts about his ability these days.

Nadal was surprisingly defeated at the round of 32 stage against Borna Coric in Cincinnati, but you simply cannot rule out that he comes out on top for a third grand slam of the year and moves to 23 grand slam wins to cement himself as one of the best tennis players of all time.

At +400, the value isn’t tremendous, but he’s won this tournament four times in the past, so don’t rule it out again. He’s our pick.

Andy Murray (+13000)

While we won’t be betting on Andy Murray to win the US Open following his Western & Southern Open performance, it is worth keeping an eye on the wily veteran, who must smell a huge opportunity to win this tournament for a second time.

The one-time world number one has struggled to get back to his best since having hip replacement surgery but has shown an ability to win games against tough opposition in spite of that.

The 35-year-old is now ranked at number 48 in the world, climbing his way back after a long period out to show just how good he once was.

Cincinnati saw him beaten by Cameron Norrie in the round of 32, but he has already progressed into the second round at Flushing Meadows with a dominant win over Francisco Cerundulo in straight sets (7-5, 6-3, 6-3).

It’s unlikely he wins this because the next generation of tennis players are now better than him. But who wouldn’t want to see him sign off with one last swan song?
