The 2025 Ryder Cup is nearly upon us. This year marks the 45th edition of the matchup between some of the best golfers from the United States and Europe. The event, which takes place every two years, will be played at the Bethpage Black course in New York on September 26-28. Europe won the 2023 event behind a team captained by Luke Donald. Donald is back in that spot in 2025. He faces a Keegan Bradley-helmed U.S. squad. The last time a team won back-to-back Ryder Cup events was from 2010 to 2014, when Europe won three in a row.
Team USA’s lineup is anchored by world number one Scottie Scheffler, who is coming off a win at the Procore Championship, his sixth victory of the PGA season. Scheffler, who has not finished outside the top 10 in competition since mid-February, is joined by J.J. Spaun, who captured the US Open earlier this year and placed sixth at the Procore Championship.
Captain Keegan Bradley’s picks for the team were Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, Cameron Young, Patrick Cantlay, and Sam Burns. The picks complement automatic qualifiers Scheffler, Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English, and Bryson DeChambeau.
Four players on the U.S. team are making their first appearance at the Ryder Cup, which gives the European squad an advantage in the experience department.
One of the keys for Bradley is putting the right players together for success. One of the most interesting selections will be who Thomas plays with, as his past partner, Jordan Spieth, is not in the mix this year.
The reigning Ryder Cup champs are back with a very familiar looking team for the 2025 edition of the event. The European squad features just one player who did not compete in 2023. That player is Rasmus Højgaard, who replaces his twin brother, Nicolai, on the team. However, four players in total have never competed in a U.S.-based Ryder Cup.
Captain Luke Donald’s team includes automatic qualifiers Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Højgaard, and Tyrrell Hatton. His captain’s picks are: Ludvig Åberg, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, and Sepp Straka.
Fleetwood enters the competition as the No. 8-ranked player in the world. He enters the Ryder Cup following a win at the Tour Championship in late August.
McIlroy will play in his eighth Ryder Cup this year, while Rose competes in his seventh. In short, the European squad is not only more experienced in playing this event as a unit, but also has more overall appearances and experience in Ryder Cup competition. That’s not something to overlook when considering betting picks for the event.
The question one must ask heading into this year’s Ryder Cup is if they favor the individual play of the U.S. team on a home course over the team cohesion and experience of the European club. Add to that mix that the course they are playing on is very difficult and that the U.S. team will be under pressure to win at home.
We’re going with Team Europe in New York.
The betting pick is Team Europe to win the 2025 Ryder Cup.
