Heading into the heat of summer, the 124th U.S. Open is this week and the national open golf championship of the United States features an electric and loaded field this year. Leading the pack in terms of preferred betting predictions is the awesome Scottie Scheffler. While the 2024 Masters champion had a bizarre run-in at the 2024 PGA Championship which led to a disappointing outing, this could be a great opportunity for a rebound showing at Pinehurst. Meanwhile, some of the other top contenders in the field per some outlets are perennial contender Rory McIlroy, 2024 PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele, and the 2024 Tour Champion, Viktor Hovland. Of course, each player brings a lot to the table but there can be only one champion.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of the top contenders at the 2024 U.S. Open along with a selected winner and even more notes about golf wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Scottie Scheffler (Odds: +325)

Recognized as still the world’s number one player per the Official World Golf Ranking, the dominant Texan has had a stellar past couple of years. With 10 career PGA wins, he has already notched four this year, including two major championships. This of course includes his 2024 Masters Tournament title where he won by four strokes over Ludvig Aberg and also his dramatic victory at The Players Championship where he won by one stroke. While his PGA Championship run was hampered by a “misunderstanding”  with local law enforcement, he still was able to post some respectable scores in that tournament. In addition to his major wins this year, he also recently won the RBC Heritage tournament back in April.

The No. 2 Player: Rory McIlroy (Odds: +1200)

McIlroy is a consistent choice at the top of the betting markets for each major championship, but he has just been snakebitten when it comes to winning major titles, having not done so since 2014. When it comes to this season though, he has certainly had some solid moments. After struggling earlier in the year on the PGA Tour, he won his first title of 2024 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry in a playoff match. In his next start, the Northern Irish player would lock down the Wells Fargo Championship for the fourth time in his career. McIlroy put together a sensational final stretch where he closed with a 6-under 65, playing the final 11 holes in six under.

The Third Contender: Xander Schauffele (Odds: +1400)

Another player who is usually in the mix for each tournament he plays in, Schauffele finally broke through earlier this year, in terms of winning a major championship, by locking down the 2024 PGA Championship. He won the tournament with a score of 21 under par, which is a record low for a major championship. For this event, he beat Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke after DeChambeau also birdied the final hole. The San Diego native has eight PGA Tour wins to his credit, but would of course like to add more as he heads to North Carolina. In the past, he has finished within the top ten in the U.S. Open six different times. He finished tied for 10th place last year.

The Final Contender: Viktor Hovland (Odds: +1600)

Perhaps the most accomplished Norwegian player ever on the PGA Tour, Hovland enters this year’s tournament as a potential dark horse contender to win the title. Per his Tour bio, he became the first Norwegian to win on the PGA Tour (at the 2020 Puerto Rico Open) and on the European Tour (the 2021 BMW International Open). Noted above, he also claimed the 2023 Tour Championship resulting in his first FedEx Cup. While he has yet to win a title in 2024, he did notch three victories in 2023 alone. Moreover, he stands to improve on his prior U.S. Open outings and is coming off a third-place finish at the PGA Championship.

Prediction: In what should be a fine showcase of professional golf, take Scheffler to rebound here and reclaim his throne at the top of the golf world (not like he ever left).
