Taking place at the iconic Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, the 2024 PGA Championship is this week and will be the final men’s major tournament of the golf season. The player to watch heading into this tournament is of course the red-hot Scottie Scheffler. The Texan has won four tournaments this year including the 2024 Masters. However, 2023 PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka will have something to say about that as he makes a bid to win this tournament for a fourth time overall. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy enters this contest looking to win a major title for the first time since 2014 when he won the PGA and the Open Championship. Finally, a dark horse candidate in this event is Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg who has been roaring up the charts following a stellar college career.

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from favorites going into the 2024 PGA Championship, a predicted winner of this major tournament, and also more notes about PGA betting.

The No. 1 Contender: Scottie Scheffler (Odds: +400)

The reigning number one player in the world (and he has been for some time), Scheffler is a dominating force on the PGA Tour. Most recently, he became the first player in history to win The Players Championship in back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024. The winner of two different major championships (most recently the 2024 Masters), he is looking to avenge his second-place finish in last year’s PGA Championship. With 13 professional wins under his belt at only 27 years of age, the Texas Longhorn is perhaps the face of professional golf. In four outings at the PGA Championship, he has made the top-10 three times with the aforementioned second-place finish.

The No. 2 Player: Rory McIlroy (Odds: +900)

Another iconic player, McIlroy is still aiming for his first major title since 2014, but he has had a lot of success at this event in the past. The winner of the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014, he has 25 professional wins under this belt and is one of the most notable professional players in the world. In addition to his two wins at this tournament, he has notched four top-five finishes along with eight total top-ten outings. At last year’s event, he tied for seventh place, giving him another top-ten outing in his career at this tournament. Perhaps he finally breaks his major championship drought and takes home his third PGA Championship title at Valhalla.

The Third Contender: Brooks Koepka (Odds: +1200)

Another fantastic player (and frequent recurring guest on Pardon My Take), Koepka is angling for his sixth overall major championship this week and an astonishing fourth overall PGA Championship as well. With 20 professional wins already in his career, the Floridian is a fantastic player and has been rebounding nicely following a minor slump post-2019. In addition to his victory last year at the PGA, he also won three different LIV Golf events in 2023 as well. With five major titles, he has found the most success at the PGA Championship, finishing within the top five six times overall. He certainly has the talent to win again here and get into the conversation of challenging Scheffler for the title of best in the world.

The Final Contender: Ludvig Aberg (Odds: +1600)

Our last athlete spotlight, Aberg turned professional in June 2023 and has done an excellent job of rising up the rankings. In the past, he has been ranked as the number one player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings for a total of 29 weeks. Moreover, he won the Ben Hogan Award as the best collegiate player in the United States in both 2022 and 2023 while at Texas Tech University. He finished second at the 2024 Masters Tournament, and in addition to his four professional victories, he is currently rated as the sixth-best player in the world. Certainly a talented and accomplished player, this would be a major breakthrough performance for him to shock the golf world and knock off the other fantastic players on this list.

Prediction: As has been the case for a little bit of time now, take Scheffler to win here unless he is somehow not able to play. He is too consistent and on too much of a roll to think otherwise.
