Following dramatic conclusions at the PGA Championship and the Masters, the U.S. Open is on deck this week with some golf action on tap. Leading the charge from the field is 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler who won that tournament with a three-stroke win over Rory McIlroy. After him, Jon Rahm is among the top players in the field, following a win at this year’s Masters in addition to three additional victories in 2023 alone. Moreover, to the surprise of no one, Brooks Koepka, who is fresh off a win at the PGA Championship (his third time winning the tournament) is now shooting for his third time winning the U.S. Open this week. Finally, a dark horse contender in the field to watch is former UCLA Bruin, Patrick Cantlay, who has been recognized as a top-three player in the world.

In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of the selected athletes, along with a predicted U.S. Open winner, and more notes about golf wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Scottie Scheffler (Odds: +750)

The winner of the 2023 Players Championship, Scheffler is recognized by some as perhaps the best player in the world. A remarkably consistent athlete, the New Jersey native finished second at the 2023 PGA championship, while also ending up tied for second at last year’s U.S. Open. With six PGA Tour already in his young career, he has been knocking on the door of winning a second major title and this could be his breakthrough tournament. The 2021-22 PGA Tour Player of the Year, Scheffler is a steady choice for each tournament he enters.

The No. 2 Player: Jon Rahm (Odds: +1100)

Hailing from the Basque Country in Spain, Rahm is having another excellent year in 2023, notching four victories along with, as stated above, the 2023 Masters title. He was been successful at this event before, winning the U.S. Open in 2021 and finishing tied for third in 2019. Last year was a bit of a down year though for the superstar has ended up tied for twelfth place at this tournament. Moreover, he also has an opportunity to rebound after a dismal performance at the PGA Championship where he finished tied for 50th.

The Third Contender: Brooks Koepka (Odds: +1100)

Coming off a stellar victory at the 2023 PGA Championship, Koepka has firmly rebounded into golf’s highest echelon after having a bit of a downturn following a spectacular run from 2018-19. The Florida State Seminole also faced some controversy as well after defecting to the LIV Golf League last year. That said, with recent news of LIV and the PGA merging last week, it would appear that Koepka can focus more on golf which is bad news to his fellow competitors.

The Final Contender: Patrick Cantlay (Odds: +1800)

Our last athlete spotlight, Cantlay is aiming for his first-ever major championship win, but he has come close before. At the 2019 PGA Championship, he finished tied for third and has finished in the top ten at both The Open Championship (2022) and the Masters (2019). That said, he was recognized as the 2021 PGA Tour Player of the Year and has notched nine professional wins in his career. Seen as a top three player in the world by some outlets as recently as this past week, Cantlay has an opportunity to make history in Los Angeles this week with a win.

Prediction: In what should be an exciting tournament, especially after the recent merger with LIV, take Scheffler to win here and finally get his second major title
