Fans of the PGA Tour are in for a treat this week as one of the most storied tournaments is set to take place in the RBC Canadian Open. This tournament is the third oldest continuously running golf tournament on the PGA Tour after The Open Championship and the U.S. Open. Slated as the favorite for this event is Rory McIlroy who has won the last two Canadian Opens, including setting a tournament record score in 2019 with an aggregate of 258. Behind him is a trio of strong performers in Tyrrell Hatton, Sam Burns, and Cameron Young. Burns, the youngest of the group, has already won five times on the PGA Tour while Young was named the 2021-22 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these athletes along with a predicted winner of the RBC Canadian Open.

The No. 1 Contender: Rory McIlroy (Odds: +500)

As referenced above, McIlroy has performed extremely well at this tournament in the past, winning it the last two times it has been held. The main thing working against the former world number one player is that winning a tournament three times in a row is extremely hard to do. That said, he has already won one other tournament three times before in the Tour Championship, so perhaps this will be something of a routine for McIlroy. Moreover, he is still angling for his first win of 2023.

The No. 2 Player: Tyrrell Hatton (Odds: +1200)

An athlete with six overall wins on the European Tour and one on the PGA Tour, Hatton is aiming for perhaps his biggest win yet if he can lock down first place in Canada. A member of the 2018 Ryder Cup squad, the 31-year-old native of England last won a PGA event back in 2020 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That said, while he has won a handful of European Tour events, he has yet to finish in the top ten at a major championship since 2019. Perhaps this is his big comeback tournament.

The Third Contender: Sam Burns (Odds: +1400)

Burns is one of the dark horse young stars on the PGA Tour and he has already made his mark on the pro circuit since he departed LSU. With five career PGA Tour wins to this point, including earlier this year at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, the 26-year-old is a rising star on the circuit. While he has not fared particularly well at big championships (his highest placement at a major to date was 20th at the 2022 PGA Championship), he is still consistent enough in this more wide-open field

The Final Contender: Cameron Young (Odds: +1400)

The last golfer spotlight for the Canadian Open, Young has had a slew of near-championship runs in his short time on the PGA Tour. A Wake Forest Demon Deacon, he has twice finished in the top three in major championships and has posted several other runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour in addition to his two Korn Ferry Tour wins. Earlier this year, he finished in the top ten at the Masters Tournament, notching a seventh-place finish.

Prediction: This tournament features a wide-open field so it truly is anyone’s game heading into Toronto. With that in mind, take an upstart like the plucky Burns to knock off McIlroy in Canada
