Fans of the PGA Tour are in for a treat this week as one of the most storied tournaments is set to take place in the RBC Canadian Open. This tournament is the third oldest continuously running golf tournament on the PGA Tour after The Open Championship and the U.S. Open. A member of the 2018 Ryder Cup squad, the 31-year-old native of England last won a PGA event back in 2020 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That said, while he has won a handful of European Tour events, he has yet to finish in the top ten at a major championship since 2019. Perhaps this is his big comeback tournament.
Burns is one of the dark horse young stars on the PGA Tour and he has already made his mark on the pro circuit since he departed LSU. With five career PGA Tour wins to this point, including earlier this year at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, the 26-year-old is a rising star on the circuit. While he has not fared particularly well at big championships (his highest placement at a major to date was 20th at the 2022 PGA Championship), he is still consistent enough in this more wide-open field.
The last golfer spotlight for the Canadian Open, Young has had a slew of near-championship runs in his short time on the PGA Tour. A Wake Forest Demon Deacon, he has twice finished in the top three in major championships and has posted several other runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour in addition to his two Korn Ferry Tour wins. Earlier this year, he finished in the top ten at the Masters Tournament, notching a seventh-place finish.
Prediction: This tournament features a wide-open field so it truly is anyone’s game heading into Toronto. With that in mind, take an upstart like the plucky Burns to knock off McIlroy in Canada.
