His strongest run at this event occurred from 2014 (when he won the championship) to 2018, where he finished within the top five of each tournament. That said, he is coming off a tied-for sixth-place finish in the 2023 edition of the event. However, the big question mark here for the athlete is if he can shake off the disappointing finish at the U.S. Open and rebound at Royal Troon. McIlroy is a battle-tested veteran, but this will be a big storyline at this event.
Another accomplished player, the native of San Diego, California is a sensational player and also the winner of the 2024 PGA Championship, his first major title. Moreover, this is perhaps his best year to date of professional golf with top-10 finishes, including two top-five outings, in each major championship he has entered. Like Schauffele though, he will be looking to improve on his track record at the British Open (he finished in 60th place last year).
Prediction: Another wide-open tournament, maybe this is the time McIlroy finally breaks through and the golf gods smile upon him after the U.S. Open.
