The stock cars are making a run south of the border this week in the NASCAR Viva Mexico 250. It’s a road course race, so naturally, that’s changing the list of usual suspects atop the odds board for this race.
Road course specialist Shane van Gisbergen is being given +200 favorite’s odds in this race. NASCAR Cup Series leader William Byron is at +700, just behind the ever-consistent Christopher Bell at +600.
Tyler Reddick (+800) and Chase Elliott (+900) are the only other drivers with betting lines shorter than +1000.

Sunday’s race will cover 100 laps and 241.7 miles at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. Stages are 20, 20 and 55 laps.
The Viva Mexico 250 will mark the first international NASCAR Cup Series race in 25 years. It’s also the first points race held outside the USA since the 1950s.
The Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course circuit is also host to the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix. The track previously played host to NASCAR Xfinity Series from 2005-2008.
Let’s look at the top contenders for the NASCAR Viva Mexico 250.
The New Zealander was sixth this spring at Circuit Of The Americas (COTA) and learned his racing on road courses such as this one.
When racing on NASCAR road circuits, van Gisbergen is showing one win, with an average finish of 5.5. He’s never finished worse than seventh on a NASCAR road course.
Bell already has a road-course win this spring at COTA. That was the third road-course victory of his NASCAR Cup Series career.
The driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports is a more than capable road course racer. Byron shows road-course wins at COTA and Watkins Glen.
This spring at COTA, Byron finished second. Since the start of the 2024 season, Byron is displaying an average finish of 3.5 in road-course events.
Reddick’s first NASCAR Cup Series triumph came at Road America in 2022. He won at COTA in 2023 and has finished in the top five there four years in a row.
Elliott broke his NASCAR Cup Series maiden with a win at Watkins Glen in 2018.
He’s also competed in endurance racing at the 24 Hours of Daytona.
Allmendinger has plenty of road racing experience in open-wheel racing. He won five IndyCar races in one season.
His first NASCAR Cup Series win came on the road course at Watkins Glen in 2014.
Larson has proven to be among NASCAR’s most versatile drivers. He’s enjoyed success in open wheel racing, endurance racing and dirt track racing.
He won on the road course ar Sonoma last year.
Even though he’s currently second and trailing Byron by 41 points (576-535), Larson is set as the +350 chalk to win the NASCAR Cup Series title. It’s no wonder when you dig a little deeper into the numbers. Overall points is the only category Larson isn’t leading.
He’s tied for first in wins with three. Larson is the outright leader in top fives (9), top 10s (11), laps led (851) and playoff points (23).
Despite sitting atop the points standings, Byron is the +700 fifth betting choice to be champion. He hasn’t posted a win since the season-opening Daytona 500 in February. Bell (+450), Denny Hamlin (+550) and Ryan Blaney (+550) are all given shorter odds to be champion than Byron.
