Recognized as one of the four major men’s golf championships, the PGA Championship is scheduled to kick off later this month from Southern Hills Golf Club in Tulsa. With a prize fund of approximately $12 million at stake, this is one of the premier tournaments on the PGA Tour and a must-watch for any golf die-hard or casual fan. In last year’s edition of the competition from Kiawah Island, Phil Mickelson was able to beat the field with a score of 282 (-6 under par and two strokes ahead of the field). With “Lefty” pulling away from runner-ups Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen, it is anyone’s guess on who will make the victory push this year.

For this breakdown, SBS will go over some of the biggest favorites at this year’s tournament and who will eventually take home the title as the 2022 PGA Tour Championship winner.

Favorites to Win The 2022 PGA ChampionshipBetOnline
Scottie Scheffler+1100
Rory McIlroy+1400
Jon Rahm+1400
Justin Thomas+1600

The No. 1 Contender: Scottie Scheffler (Odds: +1100)

Coming off an amazing win at the 2022 Masters Tournament, Scheffler is aiming for more history in Oklahoma later this month. Prior to winning at Augusta earlier this year, Scheffler had never won a major title and would be making quite a bit of history if he is able to pull off the feat in Tulsa. The 20202 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year certainly is riding a big wave of momentum, but in a stacked field like this he will have his hands full. Nonetheless, he has won four times during the 2022 PGA Tour season, which would give him four victories in his last six starts, including his win at the 2022 Masters

The No. 2 Player: Jon Rahm (Odds: +1400)

The reigning U.S. Open Champion, Rahm had a dismal performance at the 2022 Masters (he finished tied for 27th place) and will be looking to rebound in a big way at the 2022 PGA Championship. While he had a tough time at Augusta, Rahm was able to notch a victory earlier this month at the 2022 Mexico Open. In that competition, he was able to outlast the trio of Tony Finau, Kurt Kitayama, and Brandon Wu en route to his championship south of the border. As far as prior performances at the PGA Championship go, Rahm’s best finish was tied for a fourth place back in 2018. He has the talent to go that far again but it remains to be seen if he can push it over the top this time.

Third Ranked Contender: Rory McIlroy (Odds: +1400)

One of the most decorated athletes in this field, McIlroy is one of the few multiple-time PGA Championship winners in this year’s tournament. While it has been some time since he won two of three PGA Championships from 2012-to 2014, the pro from Northern Ireland is still one of the world’s best when he is on his game. However, he has struggled during the last three PGA Championships he has participated in. After finishing tied for eighth place in 2019, McIlroy ended up tied for 33rd in 2020 and then tied for 49th in 2021. You should never count out a player of McIlroy’s caliber, but he needs a consistent outing in Oklahoma to get back on top.

Final Contender Spotlight: Justin Thomas (Odds: +1600)

The 2020 PGA Player of the Year, Thomas is aiming for his first-ever title at the PGA Championship. After notching his first-ever major at the 2017 PGA Championship, Thomas rose to national prominence as one of the most consistent golfers in the world. After winning the 2021 title at The Players Championship (knocking off runner-up Lee Westwood), Thomas has been playing around the top of the leaderboard. Earlier this year he finished tied for eighth place at the Masters but will be looking for more and keep the good times rolling in Tulsa.

Prediction: Selecting a winner for this year’s PGA Championship can feel like picking a needle out of a haystack, but going with someone who has been there before is not a bad idea. This is why Thomas is the play to win the 2022 title
