Tappan Street is the top selection in the Pegasus World Cup. Last year’s Florida Derby winner was out with an injury, but came back with a sharp local victory in an allowance, showing he is still interested in running and can still handle Gulfstream well. He has good tactical speed and proven 1 ⅛-mile stamina, and trainer Brad Cox’s charges tend to move forward second off the lay.
Poster has tables to turn on Skippylongstocking last out after missing by a head in the Harlan’s Holiday (G3). However, he showed in that race that he can handle Gulfstream and that he can make up ground over that course. With so much speed entered in the race, he can use that ability to good effect here. Trainer Eoin Harty also sparkles with first-time blinkers and horses coming third off the lay, and this all leads to a lot to like for a huge price.
Disco Time is the morning-line favorite, but take a stand against him. Yes, he has yet to lose – but now he faces older foes for the first time, he usually shows speed, and there’s a lot of speed drawn outside him. He also risks a tough trip from the fence in a full field, and he has never stretched out this far. That’s too many questions for a short price in a full field.
White Abarrio, the other one from the shorter-priced group, has a bit more appeal. The defending champion hasn’t won since a local race last March, and has been scratched from his last two starts, but at least he does his best work at Gulfstream and has been able to fire well off a long layoff. He would be no surprise to find in the frame again, or even to become the first two-time Pegasus hero.
Full Serrano is one of many speed horses in this spot, but he has proven himself to be game enough even when he has to fight on the early pace. The question remains whether he likes Gulfstream as this is his first visit, but he has the kind of speed that plays well there and he should be able to shake off other frontrunning types and at least hang on for a piece amid the late-runners.
Banishing and Skippylongstocking are also worth sprinkling underneath in deeper exotics. Banishing has proven he can stay the distance and he consistently fires well enough for a piece. Skippylongstocking does his best work in Hallandale Beach and jockey Tyler Gaffalione is often able to cajole his better races from him.
