Known for its incredibly stunning backdrop, the Monte-Carlo Masters is an event that features some high stakes on the ATP Tour. This year’s edition has some big storylines as well behind it as perhaps the best player on the planet, Novak Djokovic, makes his return to the court following a short break from playing due to American visa restrictions. With the Joker taking up the bulk of the headlines, 19-year-old phenom Carlos Alcaraz is another athlete to watch here as he was able to notch his first-ever world No. 1 ranking earlier this year. Beyond that fantastic duo, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas is a player that has been known to challenge for tournament titles regularly. Moreover, fourth seed Casper Rudd is another contestant that could make a run at the Monte Carlo title.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each athlete in contention along with some other thoughts and notes about tennis wagering.

First Contender Spotlight: Novak Djokovic (+110)

An athlete that needs no introduction, Djokovic is expected to make his return this week at Monte Carlo after not being able to compete at the Miami Open and Indian Wells. The Joker has won a joint-record 22 majors and also a record 38 Masters, which of course includes the Monte-Carlo Masters. Aside from his break from North American competition, Djokovic has been strong in 2023 thus far, winning the Australian Open earlier this year. However, clay is his weakest surface, posting a career-winning percentage of 80%, albeit with 257 career wins.

Second Player Spotlight: Carlos Alcaraz (+150)

The youngest player on this list, Alcaraz has made waves in the last couple of years given his rapid ascension in the sport at such a prodigal age. After winning the U.S. Open last year, he would go on to achieve the world No. 1 ranking as the best tennis player in the world, a title he held onto as recently as last month. Already with eight career titles to his credit, the 19-year-old has locked down two titles in 2023 thus far, including the Indian Wells Masters. Moreover, Alcaraz is currently 3-0 in ATP Masters 1000 finals appearances.

Third Contender Spotlight: Stefanos Tsitsipas (+700)

A player that is looking for his third overall Monte-Carlo Masters championship, Tsitsipas has also risen up the ranks and will be looked at by some as a top-three player at this tournament. The Greek player is also coming off his second-ever Grand Slam final appearance earlier this year when he fell just short against Djokovic at the Australian Open. Though he has certainly had a ton of success on the ATP Tour, he has come up short against the other big names on this list. Tsitsipas’ career record against the other three players here is 3-15.

Last Player Spotlight: Casper Ruud (+1200)

The final athlete spotlight for the Monte-Carlo Masters, Ruud is perhaps the best Norwegian tennis player of all time with nine total ATP Tour singles titles to his credit. Currently recognized as the No. 4 overall player in the world, the 24-year-old is coming off two Grand Slam finals appearances last year, at the U.S. Open and also at the French Open. However, this year he has run into trouble, notching an overall record of 5-6 in 2023 alone.

Prediction: Until someone can slay the Joker on a consistent basis, the sport will still be his. Take Djokovic to win after a break and also with Alcaraz battling injuries
