Heading to one of the most majestic tennis venues in the world, the 2024 Monte Carlos Masters features the best in the world of tennis doing battle on the fantastic ocean-view courts. Entering this tournament, the usual quartet of tennis stars are the main contenders at this event. Per the ATP site, the top four seeds in this tournament are Novak Djokovic at one, followed by Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev. As of this article’s writing, Djokovic is the top contender in this tournament and has won this event twice before. Sinner is the reigning Australian Open champion while the other two contenders both are vying for more positive momentum in 2024.

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these participants, a predicted winner, along with even more notes and information about tennis betting.

The No. 1 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +145)

While Djokovic is the top seed at the Monte Carlo Masters, Alcaraz is still considered by various outlets to be the odds-on favorite at this clay court event. The Spaniard earlier this year won the Indian Wells Open, his second time doing so in his career. A two-time Grand Slam winner, Alcaraz is perhaps the biggest “next up” star in tennis and has in many ways, arrived as the new face of the sport. In terms of the Monte Carlo Masters though, he struggled in the past, posting a career record of 0-1 in the event and missing the event in 2021 and last year. He has a great opportunity though to do some damage here in Monte Carlo against the best in the world.

The No. 2 Contender: Novak Djokovic (Odds: +210)

Perhaps the greatest tennis star of all time, Joker is coming off an excellent 2023 where he won three Grand Slam titles and made the final round of Wimbledon. This year, he has yet to win a championship but is obviously looking to change that narrative as he looks to erase more tennis benchmarks in the sport’s record books. As noted above, he has won the Monte Carlo tournament twice and has an overall record of 36-14 at the event. However, his last title came here in 2015 and in the last couple of installments of this tournament, he has struggled, last advancing to the quarterfinal round in 2019.

Third Ranked Athlete: Jannik Sinner (Odds: +380)

A breakthrough star in recent years, the Italian tennis ace is looking to do some more damage this year after his phenomenal win at the Australian Open. In addition to his Grand Slam victory, Sinner most recently won the 2024 Miami Open earlier this year. Last year, he made the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters which was his best performance ever at the event. In his career at the Monte Carlo tournament, he has accrued an overall record of 7-3. In his career, he has won 13 different singles tournaments, and last year he notched a mark of 21-6 in ATP Tour Masters 1000 events. In terms of clay court events, he has a mark of 43-20 in his career to show, which is his least successful surface to date (winning percentage of 68%).

Final contender spotlight: Daniil Medvedev (Odds: +430)

Medvedev made the final round of the Australian Open earlier this year and has had the most consistent tournament appearances of perhaps any contender on this list. In addition to his performance in Australia, he made the final round of the Indian Wells Open and also the semifinals of the Miami Open. With a mark of 9-2 this year in ATP tournaments, Medvedev has been a strong pick in each contest he has entered this year. Moreover, last year he notched a mark of 23-7 along with two tournament victories (Miami Open and Italian Open). In his career, he has done an excellent job of making final rounds, accruing an overall mark of 20-17, giving him 20 titles to show to date.
