The 2022 Miami Grand Prix will be the first-ever edition of the race in Formula 1 racing and it will feature a dazzling field. Headlining the roster of drivers will be Max Verstappen who is the 2021 Formula One World Champion. Coming into the event, though, Charles Leclerc is the Drivers’ Championship overall leader after the fourth round of the 2022 Formula One World Championship. Currently in third place in the standings and also third on the SBS preview is Sergio Perez who is five points behind Verstappen in the overall competition.

For this competition, SBS breaks down the top three favorites going into the fifth-round competition and who will ultimately take home the gold in Miami.

The No. 1 Contender: Max Verstappen (Odds: +100)

A huge star in the sport, Verstappen is one of the most recognizable names in F1 racing betting. Currently, in second place in the Drivers’ Championship rankings, the Dutch racer is a force to be reckoned with on the track. As of the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the 24-year-old has achieved 22 victories and 14 pole positions since he started his F1 career at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix. A tenacious racer, Verstappen is one of the most consistent drivers on the circuit and has been having another great season in 2022 following his world championship in F1 in 2021. The Dutch racer is coming off a win at the Emilia Romagna, which is his second of the season after winning the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March.

The No. 2 Contender: Charles Leclerc (Odds: +120)

The current leader in the overall Drivers’ Championship standings, Leclerc, is definitely riding a hot wave. The Monégasque racing star is having a tremendous year thus far and has already notched two wins this season. His first victory came at the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix which was the season-opening race while his latest win occurred at the Australian Grand Prix back in April. With 86 points so far on the season, Leclerc is 27 points ahead of his rival Verstappen in the rankings. Prior to this season, the native of Monaco had had some success, he finished fourth in the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship season, but nothing like this. The big question now is if Leclerc can sustain his winning ways over the course of 22 races.

The Final Contender: Sergio Pérez (Odds: +1100)

A veteran racer, at least when compared to his peers in this article, Pérez is seeking his first-ever world championship in 2022. Currently ranked as the third-place contender in the overall standings, the Mexican racer is coming off back-to-back second-place finishes. Though he has not won any races this season, his last victory did come around this same time last year at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. A consistent threat in each race he has entered, the 32-year-old driver for Red Bull Racing also has the luxury of competing against Verstappen regularly since they are on the same team. Perhaps he will have the winning edge against his teammate this time.

Prediction: With F1 racing almost anything can happen, but picking a sure thing is never a bad idea. Though he is far from a surefire winner, Verstappen is as tenacious as they come in the sport and the projected winner in Miami
