The 2025 Formula 1 season is nearing its end. With just two races left on 2025 F1 schedule, the drivers head to Qatar for the 2025 running of the Qatar Airways Qatar Grand Prix. The race marks the 23rd round of the 24-round season.
With the Qatar GP and the Abu Dhabi GP the only races left on the F1 calendar, McLaren has the top two drivers in the standings in Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. However, Max Verstappen of Team Red Bull has performed incredibly well as of late, winning four of the past eight races, while finishing as the runner-up in two and third in the other two. Verstappen won the recent Las Vegas GP. Meanwhile, Norris, who had finished in second, and Piastri (fourth) were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix for illegal plank wear.
The Qatar GP has been run three times, with Lewis Hamilton winning the first race in 2021. With no competition in 2022, Verstappen has earned the checkered flag in the past two years. Norris placed second in 2024, while Charles Leclerc finished in third.

With his win in Las Vegas, Max Verstappen, the four-time defending F1 champion, has 366 points, which puts him tied for second with Oscar Piastri and 24 points behind the first-place Lando Norris. With two races left on the schedule, the 2025 F1 championship is very much up for grabs.
Verstappen is one of two drivers to win back-to-back races this season. The other is Norris, who won the recent Mexico City Grand Prix and the São Paulo GP. Verstappen did not have the best first half of the 2025 F1 season, winning two of the first 14 races and finishing on the podium a total of five times, but the 28-year-old has put that behind him since he placed second at the Dutch GP. Including that race, Verstappen has made the podium in his past eight starts and worked himself into contention to win a fifth consecutive title. Only Michael Schumacher has won five F1 titles in a row. Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and Juan Manuel Fangio are the four-time winners. Schumacher won his championships consecutively.
Verstappen has started the Qatar GP three times, placing second in his first start and then winning the race in 2023 and 2024.
Lando Norris saw his 18 points for a second-place finish at the Las Vegas GP disappear when he and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri were disqualified for illegal plank wear. According to a statement, the FIA measured Norris’ right-hand front side at 8.88 mm and his right-hand rear at 8.93 mm. The requirement is 9 mm. While the DQ did not change the team standings, where McLaren has a massive lead over Mercedes, the disqualification has made the last two races on the 2025 F1 schedule extremely important.
The 26-year-old Norris won the opening race of the season in Australia but had to wait until Monaco to claim his second victory. Things have been mostly up for him since that victory, as he has made the podium in 10 of his 14 recent starts. In addition to his DQ in Vegas, Norris placed 18th in Canada and the Netherlands, and seventh in Azerbaijan, in the races where he missed the top three.
Norris placed second overall last year, and he is looking for his first career F1 title. Norris has finished ninth, third, and 10th in his three Qatar GP starts.
McLaren star Oscar Piastri was once the betting favorite to win the 2025 F1 Drivers Championship. However, the 24-year-old has dropped to a distant third in the F1 Drivers Championship betting odds after missing the podium in six consecutive starts. During that run, Piastri did not finish one race, a fourth, and three races in fifth place. He was disqualified in Vegas for the same reason as his teammate, Norris.
The Australian driver had a great start to the 2025 F1 season, winning seven of the first 18 races – with victories in China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Piastri has also earned three runner-up spots and four third-place finishes during that stretch. However, he has struggled since then and fallen from the top spot in the standings. Piastri, who placed fourth last year, his second on the F1 circuit, can still win the championship with outstanding performances in his next two races.
Piastri has competed in the Qatar Grand Prix twice, placing second in 2023 and third in 2024.
The betting pick is for the red-hot Max Verstappen to win the 2025 Qatar GP. He has performed well on the course, and has been hard to beat as of late. With that being said, the betting odds are favorable to put some money down on Oscar Piastri to have a breakthrough performance on Sunday. He has done well on the Lusail International Circuit in his two starts.
