A must-watch event for fans of professional golf, the 87th edition of the Masters Tournament gets underway this week and will be the first of men’s major golf tournaments this year. The winner of the 2022 Masters, Scottie Scheffler, returns as one of the favorites this year among a host of other big names. Also in contention for this year’s big event is crowd favorite Rory McIlroy who won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year. In addition to those two, Jon Rahm is another name to keep an eye on as he has made it a point to be near the top of the leaderboard in most major tournaments. Finally, three-time major winner Jordan Spieth is a dark horse contender in this field and is angling for his first Masters title since 2015.

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of the contending golfers along with more notes about golf betting.

The No. 1 Contender: Scottie Scheffler (Odds: +800)

Coming off a fantastic 2022 season where he was named the 2021-22 PGA Tour Player of the Year, Scheffler is one of those players that always seems to be in the leaderboard mix. What’s more, Scheffler won the 2023 Players Championship, known as the “fifth major” in some circles, so the 26-year-old already has some great momentum heading into Augusta. Equally as important, there has not been a back-to-back winner at the Masters since 2001-02 when Tiger Woods pulled off the feat.

The No. 2 Player: Rory McIlroy (Odds: +800)

A former world number one player in the world, McIlroy is one of four players in history to have won four majors by the age of 25. That said, the pro from Northern Ireland is aiming for his first Masters title ever after finishing a career-best second place at the 2022 edition of the tournament. The 2022 FedEx Cup Champion, the now 33-year-old is one of the savviest players on the PGA Tour with 23 career wins to date. A fantastic player, McIlroy has won three events on the PGA Tour last season alone.

The Third Contender: Jon Rahm (Odds: +1000)

The winner of the 2021 U.S. Open, Rahm had an amazing campaign in 2021 that he is trying to replicate this year. During that spectacular year, he was also awarded the PGA Player of the Year trophy and was also the Tour’s leading money winner. That said, he has had a great start to 2023, winning three different tournaments already which is the most of any player on this list. He will look to improve on his career-best finish of fourth place (2018) at the Masters this week.

The Final Contender: Jordan Spieth (Odds: +1800)

Another athlete on this list with multiple victories at major tournaments, Spieth is shooting for his fourth overall major at Augusta this week and his second-ever Masters title. After winning said tournament in 2015, he became the second-youngest golfer ever, behind Tiger Woods, to win the prestigious tournament. Moreover, Spieth’s last PGA win came last April at the Valero Texas Open (his 13th overall PGA title) so perhaps he is due to win a title again, this time at Augusta.

Prediction: A fantastic field, this year’s champion will be someone who has never won the tournament before, which is why the red-hot Rahm is a perfect fit to put on the green jacket
