In a stellar showcase that could have recognition as perhaps the best female boxing match of the year, world champion Jessica McCaskill squares off against WBO welterweight title holder, Sandy Ryan later this month. The former is a world champ in two weight classes, having held the undisputed IBO, and the Ring female welterweight belts since 2020. Moreover, this fight will be three titles (the WBC, WBA, and WBO women’s welterweight championships), in a huge unification bout. A Commonwealth Games gold medalist back in 2018, Ryan has not lost since March of 2022 and has a 6-1 professional boxing record. Moreover, her only loss was a split decision to Erica Farias who she later defeated for the vacant WBC International super lightweight title.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these fighters along with more notes and information about boxing betting.

What to look for from: Jessica McCaskill

Recognized by many outlets (The Ring and BoxRec) as the world’s best active female welterweight, McCaskill has put together a strong career to date. In addition to her titles and other recognition, the 38-year-old has accrued a professional boxing record of 12-3. However, she is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Chantelle Cameron in Abu Dhabi. Nonetheless, this could be her big bounceback fight as she has never lost two fights in a row. Additionally, she has bested the likes of female boxing mainstays like Cecilia Brækhus (twice), Farías (twice), and Kadi Wyatt.

Over the course of her career, she has won the majority of her bouts by way of decision (seven wins). With that in mind, her last three wins were a mixed variety with stoppages in rounds three (Alma Ibarra), seven (Wyatt), and also a unanimous decision win over Brækhus in 2021. Moreover, it has almost been a year since her loss to Cameron so this should be ample time to rest up and be ready to go.

What to look for from: Sandy Ryan

Opposing the champion is Ryan who has put together a strong professional record in a relatively short time since 2021. An accomplished amateur boxer, Ryan has won multiple international medals including a 2014 World Championship in the light-welterweight division and the aforementioned 2018 gold medal. Her last three bouts have all been sound unanimous decision wins, including her winning the WBC title over Farias and the vacant WBO welterweight belt against Marie Pier Houle.

While her bouts have all been spectacular in one way or another, this will be the biggest challenge yet for Ryan in her career. Nonetheless, the English fighter should be up to the challenge. At only 29 years of age, she does have the youth advantage over McCaskill and perhaps she can wear out her veteran foe.

Prediction: This will be a close battle but look for McCaskill to hang on in this fight given her more dominant resume and ability to bounce back.
