Scheduled for later this month, the 150th edition of the Open Championship features an all-star field of 156 players. Held at the Old Course at St Andrew’s, this year’s Open is the PGA Tour’s last major championship stop for the year. Defending his title from 2021 will be American Collin Morikawa who heads into this tournament as the fourth-ranked player in the world according to the PGA rankings. This year’s field features everyone from former champions Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods to the world’s top five like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler.

For this article, SBS will take a closer look at the top contenders heading into the British Open betting season and who will end up prevailing in the end.

The No. 1 Contender: Rory McIlroy (Odds: +1000)

This year has definitely been a good one for McIlroy, but he is still looking for his first major championship since 2014. Following a win at the RBC Canadian Open last month (his second time winning the event), McIlroy is aiming for his first title at the Open since July of 2014. The 33-year-old has had a solid time at major championships this year with a second-place finish at the Masters which included a bogey-free 64 in the final round of the famous tournament. In the 12 Open Championships, he has entered, McIlroy has finished in the top three on three different occasions and has made the cut 10 of 12 times.

The No. 2 Player: Jon Rahm (Odds: +1400)

After tying for third place at the 2021 Open Championship, Rahm is one of the favorites to come back and finally be victorious at St Andrew’s. The 2020-21 PGA Player of the Year and the 2021 U.S. Open winner Rahm have had an inconsistent 2022. In the three major tournaments, he has participated in during the year, he has finished tied for 27th (Masters), tied for 48th (PGA Championship), and tied for 12th (U.S. Open). Nonetheless, he has shown he can operate at the highest levels of the sport and should not be underestimated. This will potentially be Rahm’s fourth Open Championship to date.

Third athlete spotlight: Scottie Scheffler (Odds: +1400)

Currently recognized as the No. 1 player in the world, Scheffler has made it a habit of finishing near the top of the leaderboard. The 2022 Masters champion, Scheffler tied for eighth last year at the Open Championship. Coming off a runner-up performance at the latest U.S. Open, the 26-year-old is perhaps riding the hottest streak in professional golf. While he missed the cut at the 2022 PGA Championship, this has been an excellent year for the New Jersey native as he has already amassed three other wins in addition to his title at Augusta.

Final contender spotlight: Collin Morikawa (Odds: +2000)

The last athlete on our countdown, Morikawa is looking to make history if he can lock down back-to-back Open titles at St Andrew’s later this week. At only 25 years of age, Morikawa is just entering the prime of his career. Since his win at the Barracuda Championship back in 2019, the Los Angeles native has been on a torrid pace on the PGA Tour. With two top-five major championship finishes already on the year (the Masters and the U.S. Open), Morikawa will need just a little more luck at St Andrew’s to secure the title.

Prediction: Another stacked field, take Scheffler to win here as he has been the most consistent player on this list in terms of high finishes as of late
