Slated for a big showdown this weekend at the Phillip Island Circuit, the 2023 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix features huge stakes in the 2023 MotoGP World Championship. Reigning points leader Francesco Bagnaia is coming off a win at the Indonesian Grand Prix, giving him a decent lead over second-place contender, Jorge Martín. Indeed, the latter racer trails the Italian by 18 points and needs a big showing this weekend in Australia after retiring in the last race. In terms of other racers to look out for, Italy’s Marco Bezzecchi is in third place in the standings and has notched three wins this season. Finally, another familiar face, South Africa’s Brad Binder, is in fourth place but could make a run up the standings with some strong finishes to the 2023 season.

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these racers along with a predicted race winner and even more notes about MotoGP betting.

First Contender Spotlight: Francesco Bagnaia (+250)

Noted above, the Italian racer is having an excellent season and is looking to close out the year strong with a big outing in Australia. Bagnaia rebounded from a disappointing retirement outing at the 2023 Indian Motorcycle Grand Prix by notching a second-place finish in Japan followed by a first-place outing in Indonesia this past week. Indeed with six first-place wins on the year, the Ducati driver is one of the steadiest bets in the circuit.

Second Racer Spotlight: Jorge Martín (+350)

Known as the “Martinator,” the Spanish speedster is looking to rebound in a big way this weekend in Australia. This was his second retirement race this season and in the last such instance, he notched a fourth-place finish in Spain. Moreover, he was having an excellent race stretch prior to Indonesia, locking down four consecutive top-three finishes, including two wins in his last four races.

Third Contender Spotlight: Marco Bezzecchi (+400)

Bezzecchi trails Bagnaia by 63 points in the 2023 MotoGP World Championship standings and desperately needs a big outing if he is going to make a championship push. With two wins on the year, the Italian driver has been playing the third fiddle to the above two racers all year long. That said, he did score a victory three races ago in India, so perhaps he has found a winning groove followed by back-to-back top-five outings.

Last Athlete Spotlight: Brad Binder (+600)

The last racer in the spotlight on this list, Binder is still seeking his first win of the season. A KTM driver, the South African is an athlete who always seems to be in the mix, but has not quite found the winning formula to push it over the edge. This year, he has notched six top-five outings but has yet to get a win. However, perhaps this could be the race in which he finally gets the checkered flag and makes a push into the MotoGP top three.

Prediction: Bagnaia has been the most consistent racer this season and is also on a hot streak so take the Italian to win again in Australia.
