The Gulfstream Park spur of the Kentucky Derby trail rolls on Saturday, February 28 with the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes! The 1 1/16 mile dirt race is a key Kentucky Derby prep: 50 points to the winner means they are virtually assured of a spot in the Run for the Roses, and last year’s Horse of the Year Sovereignty parlayed a Fountain of Youth win into the blanket of roses!
The 2026 edition of the Fountain of Youth drew a field of 11, featuring both well-known stakes horses and up-and-coming new faces. The stakes stars include Champagne (G1) winner Napoleon Solo, lightning-fast Swale winner Solitude Dude, and Mucho Macho Man hero Commandment. Some of the key new faces include Fair Grounds allowance winner Jackson Hole for Todd Pletcher, as well as Bill Mott trainee Chief Wallabee.

Closer to the race Gulfstream will release a morning line. The morning line can be a good guide to which horses are likely to take betting action. However, it is no guarantee of actual odds on a horse because on track, prices fluctuate until the moment the starter springs the latch of the gate.
Your best bet in the 2026 Fountain of Youth is to wager at an online sportsbook. Online sportsbooks offer benefits you’ll never find on track. Also, they often offer fixed-odds betting on major races. That way, you can lock in a price just by placing a bet instead of leaving you vulnerable to late shortening as you would be on track.
Commandment is the best bet in the Fountain of Youth. Trained by Brad Cox, he comes into the race off of an impressive win in the Mucho Macho Man, an effort that showed he can thrive over the Gulfstream Park footing. He tracked off of an honest pace before taking command, a similar trip he got in his maiden win at Churchill, and a trip that should work well in this spot with no shortage of speed entered.
Though he has yet to try a two-turn trip, he is by Into Mischief out of a mare by Kentucky Derby winner Orb, with at least enough middle-distance form in the family to suggest 1 1/16 miles shouldn’t gas him. And, trainer Brad Cox shines with both last-out winners and graded-stakes races in general, suggesting Commandment will be ready for this.
Solitude Dude looks like an up-and-coming sprint star, coming off razor-sharp victories in the Swale and the Inaugural. In the Swale he set a cozy pace, but in the Inaugural he showed he could track off a more lively one and take over – expect that latter trip here, especially from the outer gate. Though he is unlikely to stay the Derby distance, the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth trip should be no problem for this son of Yaupon.
Napoleon Solo was impressive in two starts as a juvenile and he makes his sophomore debut here. Though he wired the Champagne in his last start, he did so after setting a cracking pace, and also proved in his maiden win that he has a stalking gear. Those are good options to have, and there’s plenty in his pedigree to suggest that he’ll be able to take to two turns.
Bravaro was the runner-up in the Holy Bull – no match for Nearly, but clear of the rest of the pack despite racing keenly early. He has shown he can track a fast pace and keep running, just the trip that should keep him in the mix again here. That Holy Bull was a good outing in his first start against company bred outside New York, and Saffie Joseph, Jr. trainees tend to move forward second-up.
Talkin disappointed in the Remsen last out, well beaten by two heavy hitters in Paladin and Renegade. But, he has had a few months to freshen up and if he picks up with the form he showed earlier in his career he’ll be tough. The question is two turns, as his two good races last year were at one, but his pedigree is all route. If he can tap into that, he’ll be picking off foes late.
