Florida casino operators were in for a mild surprise when the casino slot revenue reports were finalized for April of this year. Per a recent national update, the state’s non-tribal casinos generated $60.8 million in slots revenue for April, up 2.8% year-over-year. The Florida Gaming Control Commission figures show that Magic City Casino remained the biggest revenue generator, reporting revenue of $12.8 million, up 10%. Other big performances came from Harrah’s Pompano Beach, which was up 5.3% to $11.8 million, and Hialeah Park Casino, which was up 4.3% to $8.5 million. The Casino at Dania recorded the largest year-over-year revenue increase, rising 17.6% year-over-year to $4.9 million. Finally, Gulfstream Park recorded the largest year-over-year decline, dropping 9.5% to $4.7 million, while Casino Miami revenue fell 1.9%.

April’s numbers were more encouraging for casino operators, especially after March’s numbers were a little underwhelming. Per another article, Florida’s non-tribal casinos earned $64 million in slot revenue in March, down 4.1% year-over-year. According to a report published by the Florida Gaming Control Commission, Magic City Casino saw the highest revenue during the period – $13.1 million, up 0.7%. Harrah’s Pompano Beach followed with revenues of $12.4 million, also down 6%. However, the Casino at Dania Beach posted revenue of $5.5 million, up 11%.
All other Florida casinos experienced a year-over-year decline in March, with the largest revenue drop recorded at Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino, which fell 8.8% to $5.7 million. Casino Calder dropped by 8.6% to $8.1 million, and Big Easy Casino fell by 8.4% to $3.2 million. Finally, Casino Miami was down 6.6% in March, earning $7.5 million, and Hialeah Park dropped 5% to $5.5 million.
Moving to another area of the Florida gaming scene, the Florida Gaming Control Commission and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office continue to work together as they move against the illegal land-based gambling sector in the state. In the latest operation, which saw regulatory and enforcement agencies collaborate, a total of 69 unlicensed slot machines were seized. Raids were conducted on Wednesday, May 27th, across two locations in Sarasota County. The sting, which was called Operation Early Morning, saw two search warrants executed at 4235 Clark Road in Sarasota and at Bingo Palace at 2029 South Tamiami Trail in Venice.
As a result, investigators were able to seize 30 slot machines in Sarasota and 39 slot machines at the Venice venue, along with $62,376 received in cash. This is the latest move against the illegal gambling sector, which has continued to proliferate in Florida despite the regulatory pushback and active law enforcement. Commenting on the latest operations, Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) Chair Julie Brown once again emphasized the importance of counteracting the sector and going after such illegal venues.
“Illegal gambling operations are not harmless businesses,” Brown said regarding the latest operation. “They operate outside the law, avoid oversight, create opportunities for crime, and take money from Florida communities. This operation reflects our continued commitment to working with law enforcement partners to protect Floridians and enforce the law wherever illegal gambling activity is found.”
Per the same article, FGCC director of gaming enforcement L. Carl Herold supported his colleague. He hailed a recent decision by Florida lawmakers to introduce two new enforcement units and strengthen the regulator’s response to such illegal venues, which came just in time to address the surging sprawl of such businesses. She specifically spoke of the new Sarasota County-based enforcement unit to help respond more quickly, while building local partnerships and pressure on bad actors.
“Illegal casinos are spreading into communities across Florida, and they require a focused, coordinated law enforcement response,” Herold noted. “We are proud to work alongside Florida’s Division of Gaming Enforcement and their effort to address illegal gaming operations and adult arcades,” added Sarasota Sheriff Kurt.
