Recognized as the most prestigious race in the annals of greyhound racing, the 2022 English Greyhound Derby is a must-watch event. With qualifying rounds for the tournament kicking off back in May, the finals for this competition will take place later this month on June 25th. Though defending champion Thorn Falcon fell out of the competition during the initial heats of the tournament, there are a handful of new favorites that have emerged. For instance, during the quarter-final portion of the Derby, Priceless Jet set a track record with a time of 28.78 over 500 meters. Following closely behind was Romeo Magico who notched an impressive heat-winning time of 29.01.

For this article, SBS will take a deeper dive into each competitor, what they bring to the table, and also who will ultimately be crowned as the 2022 English Greyhound Derby champion.

The No. 1 Contender: Romeo Magico (Odds: +225)

As noted above, Romeo Magico blazed to a strong heat-winning time of 29.01 in the quarter-finals. A dog that is two years old, Romeo has won its last two races and notched a sub-29 time of 28.84 during its race on June 11th. In fact, in its last five races, Romeo Magico has notched three of five first-place finishes. Currently recognized as the favorite in the competition, the dashing dog will have a strong test against a stacked field.

The No. 2 Greyhound: Kildare (Odds: +225)

The conquering champion over Thorn Falcon, Kildare, was able to knock off the 2021 winner during the second round heats of the competition. During this battle, Kildare put together one of the fastest times of the day with a blazing mark of 29.11. However, in heat one of the quarter-finals, he was bested by Priceless Jet, who set the track record during this heat. Nonetheless, Kildare has two first-place finishes in his last five competitions and has the third best time of the remaining dogs. The youngest dog spotlight on this list at almost two years of age, Kildare has youth on his side.

Third Ranked Contender: Priceless Jet (Odds: +400)

The current fastest animal on the circuit, Priceless Jet, blazed to a track record time of 28.78 in the quarter-final round. Though Priceless Jet finished in second place in his last race on June 18th, he still is perhaps the animal to watch the closest, given his high ceiling. Though he is somewhat older at three years of age, Priceless Jet has shown the ability to blast past the competition as he has consistently during the preliminary heats.

Final Contender: Mickys Barrett (Odds: +1200)

Our last animal spotlight, Mickys Barrett has had an uneven go the last couple of rounds with two second place finishes and one third place showing. Prior to that though, the two-year old competitor notched six first place finishes in a row. However, Mickys Barrett did have an uneven performance in the quarter-finals of the competition with a third place finish time of 29.50. He will need a huge performance during the final round if he wants to take home the title.

Prediction: This competition will come down to the smallest fractions of a second. With that in mind, Priceless Jet has set the fastest time as of late and should be poised for an upset victory
