A battle slated for a wintry night in San Francisco, Devin Haney returns home to the Bay Area for a stellar matchup with Regis Prograis for the latter’s WBC super lightweight title. The 24-year-old Haney is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko. In that bout, “The Dream” was able to knock off “Loma” thanks to having a superior punching percentage to his rival with many calling it a “thrilling” bout that could be up for fight of the year when it is all said and done. Conversely, Prograis is fresh off his own thrilling fight back in June when he was able to narrowly defeat Danielito Zorrilla in a split-decision title defense of his WBC light welterweight title. This helped improve the American’s record to 29-1.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these fighters along with a predicted winner and even more notes about boxing wagering.

What to look for from: Devin Haney

As noted above, Haney improved his overall record to an impressive 30-0 with his victory over Lomachenko in Las Vegas earlier this year. The Bay Area native is currently recognized as the unified world champion in the lightweight division. Moreover, as of this writing, he is also ranked as the world’s best active lightweight by ESPN and other publications. His wins have come over some of the best fighters in the sport, including Lomachenko, George Kambosos Jr. (twice), Joseph Diaz Jr., and Jorge Linares.

In the past, opponents have recognized dealing with Haney to be a tall task. The American fighter has exceptional distance control in the ring and is also very skilled when it comes to movement and putting his opponents in a tough spot. A traditional orthodox fighter, Haney also has some strong power as well, as evidenced by his 15 career knockouts. However, his last knockout win came back in 2019 so he has relied on winning via points more often than not as of late with more challenging opponents.

What to look for from: Regis Prograis

On the other hand, Prograis has won the vast majority of his fights via knockout with 24 career wins by that route to date and his last such victory coming in November of last year. This was of course against Jose Zepeda in Carson, California in the match where he won the vacant WBC light welterweight title. Since falling to Josh Taylor in a spectacular bout back in October of 2019, Prograis has been on a torrid hot streak. He has won five bouts in a row, including four KO/TKO victories.

Known as “Rougarou” which is Louisana French for ‘werewolf,’ the 34-year-old is known to be a vicious fighter that has only been stopped by Taylor in his career. With an overall record of 29-1, the champion is an accomplished competitor who has won numerous accolades in his career. As of earlier this year, he was recognized as the best active super lightweight in the world by numerous outlets from The Ring to BoxRec.

Prediction: A fantastic fight that should end the year with a bang, Haney and Prograis match up nicely, but give Haney the edge here given his record and nearly 10-year age gap.
