Following a thrilling conclusion to the 2022 NCAA football season back in February, teams are fired up and ready to go for another year of action-packed college football showdowns. With the Georgia Bulldogs knocking off the Alabama Crimson Tide, 33-18, in last year’s National Championship contest, the stage is set for another potential clash between the two SEC titans. However, there are some familiar mega powers looming in the wings looking to spoil the party for the two dominant SEC powerhouses. This includes the likes of Ohio State and also Clemson who both have made multiple appearances in the College Football Playoff bracket.

In this article, SBS will break down what each squad brings to the table and also who will be the winner of the 2023 College Football National Championship.

The No. 1 Contender: Alabama Crimson Tide (Odds: +210)

Almost every year it seems like Alabama has a team put together to win a national championship. Winners of three different national titles since 2015 under legendary head coach Nick Saban, the Tide have an NFL-ready roster that can contend with any squad in the country. While they fell to Saban disciple Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs in last year’s title tilt, they still have enough firepower to rebound in 2022. This is especially true of the offense which will be led by reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. While the Tide certainly have a great shot of returning to the national championship, they will have to contend with an increasingly-difficult slate of SEC games.

The No. 2 Squad: Ohio State Buckeyes (Odds: +375)

Winners of the first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship, the Buckeyes also feature a stellar playmaker at quarterback in C.J. Stroud. While the team did lose a slew of playmakers to the NFL like wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, they have a ton of players to come in and fill that void. That includes the likes of running back TreVeyon Henderson and defensive end Zach Harrison. Ohio State finished the 2021 season with a record of 11-2, including a mark of 8-1 in the Big Ten.

Third Ranked Contender: Georgia Bulldogs (Odds: +475)

The reigning national champions, Georgia, return a couple of key playmakers from last year’s championship squad. This includes quarterback Steston Bennett who started his career as a walk-on with the Bulldogs and ended up leading them to a national title last season. However, the main attraction for Georgia last year was their vaunted defense, which many in college football said could have been graded as one of the best units of all time. However, while the Bulldogs ended up with the biggest prize in college football last year, they also lost a ton of talent to the NFL. The Bulldogs set a new record last year for draft picks from a single school with 15 selections. While this is certainly a great feather in the cap for the program, the Dogs will feature some new players in key roles across their starting lineups.

Final Contender: Clemson Tigers (Odds: +800)

Our final contender showcase, the Tigers are seeking their first national championship since 2018. In a three-year stretch from 2016 to 2018, Clemson was able to take home two of three national championships and will be looking to replicate that success this season. Luckily for them, the same man who led them to those championships is still around in head coach Dabo Swinney. Though the Tigers finished as the No. 14 squad in the country last year, they should have the easiest road of the four teams on this list to the College Football Playoff. Prior to 2021, the Tigers had played in the ACC Championship or the CFP each year since 2014.
