Cheltenham Gold Cup: Haiti Couleurs can stay the trip

The richest prize of the Cheltenham Festival and the most prestigious race of the jumps season happens Friday, March 13: the Cheltenham Gold Cup! The three mile, 2 ½-furlong race drew a field of 11 top-class jumpers, and with two-time champion Galopin des Champs out of consideration, the field is wide open. This makes it one of the best horse race betting opportunities of the season!

Leading contenders in the race include Gaelic Warrior, going the right way for powerhouse trainer Willie Mullins, and The Jukebox Man, who makes his first start since a thrilling score in the King George VI (G1) over Bainbridge, Gaelic Warrior, and Jango Baie on boxing day. All but Bainbridge from that group lines u here. Last year’s Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin comes back for the repeat attempt, as well, though has to reverse some rough recent form.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Handicapping

Now that you have your betting account set up, it’s time to get to know the top contenders for the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup:

Cheltenham Gold Cup Key Contenders

Haiti Couleurs has some class to prove, especially after pulling up in the Betfair Chase (G1) three back at Haydock, but has stacked up two confident victories since then, including a score going longer than this two back. He wins frequently – nine of his last twelve races – and he is both well weighted and the best proven to stay all day.

Gaelic Warrior is coming into the Cheltenham Gold Cup in great form for Willie Mullins, who has won this race four times already. Though he was not Mullins’ marquee contender until the recent withdrawal of Galipin des Champs, he should thrive over the extra ground and his consistency against experienced jumpers is admirable.

The Jukebox Man has only gone over fences four times, but has never lost – and one of those wins came in a tight decision over Gaelic Warrior in the King George VI (G1) in December. He has proven he can fire well off a layoff. The biggest question is the distance, as he has yet to be asked to stay past three miles. But, if he can, he has more than enough class to prove a factor.

Cheltenham Gold Cup Longer Shots

Firefox snuck into the superfecta in the Irish Gold Cup (G1) at Leopardstown last out, a race horses often step up from to shine at Cheltenham. That was his first attempt going anywhere near this long, giving him a chance to move forward in his second longer start under a nice weight allowance. Also, he should catch a bit better ground this time than he did in that prep.

Henry de Bromhead often finds some magic at Cheltenham. Envoi Allen is 12, certainly on the old side for this race, but won the Champion Chase (G1) at Down Royal when last seen in November. His races have been well spaced out for a while with good results, and he has good form both at Cheltenham and over better ground. He could round out exotics at a big price.
