Max Verstappen maintained his strong start to the season with a victory in Imola last weekend, successfully fending off Lando Norris’ challenge. The McLaren driver finished less than a second behind the reigning champion, who, despite not delivering one of his typically dominant performances, managed to keep Norris within a two-second gap throughout the race.

The Monegasque driver is now six points ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and trails championship leader Max Verstappen by 48 points.

Aston Martin seemed to miss an opportunity to outdo Verstappen by opting to pit Alonso for dry tyres as the rain intensified. If Alonso had received treaded tyres while Verstappen remained on slicks, it seemed possible that the Spaniard could have taken the lead. However, Alonso had to pit again for intermediate tyres on the next lap, along with Verstappen, extinguishing any chances of victory.
