In what should be an excellent tournament, the 2024 Miami Open tips off later this month in what should be an excellent showcase of the best on the ATP Tour. A fantastic storyline to watch is the return of Novak Dokovic (+140) to Miami after not participating in the event the past couple of years (since 2019) due to vaccine restrictions. Of course, he is not the only main player to watch, the Joker is still the favorite in any tournament he enters. However, one would be foolish to overlook the fantastic Carlos Alcaraz (+175), who is recognized as the number two overall player in the world, followed by Italy’s Jannik Sinner (+425) who rounds out the top three athletes in the tennis world. Finally, there is one other player to watch in this tournament in Daniil Medvedev (+800) who most recently made the final round of the Australian Open.

In this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from each of these top competitors, a predicted winner at this tournament, and also some more notes about tennis wagering.

The No. 1 Contender: Novak Djokovic (Odds: +140)

One of the most dynamic players of all-time, Djokovic needs no introduction and is of course a regular mainstay in these SBS pieces. Last year, he won three of four Grand Slam titles, notching the crown at the U.S., Australian, and French Opens. Additionally, he also made the finals of Wimbledon last year along with the semifinal round of the Australian Open earlier this year. While he has not played since 2019 at the Miami Open, he has won the event an impressive  six times, with his most recent victory coming in 2016. Djokovic has a career record 44-7 at the tournament, although it has been some years since he has played in the event.

The No. 2 Contender: Carlos Alcaraz (Odds: +175)

The Spanish star has been seen by some as the next great competitor after winning the U.S. Open in 2022 along with Wimbledon last year, toppling Djokovic in the process. In the past, Alcaraz has performed well at the Miami Open, notching a record of 10-2 at the event, along with winning the competition back in 2022. This year, he is aiming for his first victory after winning three ATP 100 tournaments last year (six total titles), including the Madrid and Indian Wells Opens. Last year, he accrued a record of 25-6 in 2023 ATP 1000 competitions. Moreover, he is also looking to expand on his outing at the Australian Open earlier this year where advanced to the quarterfinals.

Third Ranked Athlete: Jannik Sinner (Odds: +425)

A fantastic player, the Italian athlete has had a great start to this year by winning the 2024 Australian Open with a great performance Down Under. Last year, he notched four titles, including making seven different final round appearances at various tennis tournaments. Moreover, in addition to his Grand Slam victory in Australia, he also has won another title this year as well. With an overall mark of 64-15 in 2023, Sinner was able to power through the competition and notch his place in the top three players in the world. In the past couple of years, he has made the final round of the Miami Open twice, most recently doing so in 2023.

Final contender spotlight: Daniil Medvedev (Odds: +800)

Standing at six-feet-six, Medvedev has a very powerful first serve which is capable of reaching 148 mph. While he has not won a Grand Slam title since 2021, he did make the final round earlier this year of the Australian Open while also making the last round of the U.S. Open last year. In 2023, he accrued a record of 66-18 along with five different title wins. This year, he has posted a record of 9-2 all on various hard court surfaces. Moreover, the Russian player won the Miami Open last year after only advancing to the quarterfinals previous to that. Of course, with a handful of Grand Slam and major tournament successes, he could be a dark horse here.
