Winner set to become first undisputed super middleweight champion in boxing history

Dating back to August of this year, Canelo Álvarez and Caleb Plant have been on a collision course to see who will reign supreme in the middleweight division of professional boxing’s highest echelon. The pre-fight build-up has been full of bad blood as the two fighters were engaged in a brief scuffle on stage during the first fight press conference back in September. This was partially due to the fact that Álvarez took offense to Plant using profanity that Álvarez interpreted as an insult to his mother. Plant has denied this being the case, but the animosity has been simmering between these two since. Slated for 12 rounds, this should be an excellent showcase and a front-row seat to history this weekend.

Below we can see what the tale of the tape looks like between the fighters and also some odds from our partners.

What to look for from Canelo

As one can surmise based on the odds above and also Álvarez’s extensive resume, he is the massive favorite going into the fight this weekend. Thanks to his impressive fighting style where he is capable of doing most anything in a boxing ring, Álvarez has been able to establish himself as the world’s best active boxer, pound for pound by multiple publications. The champion has not lost a bout since September of 2013 when he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a majority decision. This is Álvarez’s only blemish on his professional boxing record and he has been dominant since then by reeling off 14 more wins since then and one draw to Gennady Golovkin (Triple G) who he was able to defeat in their rematch a year later.

One thing that sticks out about Álvarez’s resume is his ability to showcase his power in each match he has. Though he has not won via knockout since November of 2019 (against Sergey Kovalev), Canelo has won an astounding 38 times via knockout during the course of his career dating back to 2005. Though the level of his competition has certainly risen since his days at the Arena Chololo Larios in Tonalá, Mexico, he still has the ability to end fights via knockout if his opponents are not careful. Also with Álvarez being only 31 years old at the time of this fight, he has shown few signs of slowing down. With his opponent showcasing an unblemished record, Álvarez will have a lot of motivation to secure his place in history for this undisputed showdown for all four major world titles in the super-middleweight division.

What to look for from Plant

Opposing Álvarez is the undefeated (21-0) Caleb Plant from Ashland City, Tennessee. As of October 2021, “Sweet Hands” is ranked as the world’s second-best active super-middleweight by Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and third by ESPN and The Ring. The former Golden Gloves champion at the light heavyweight level, Plant has won the majority of his fights by decision (12) but also has an almost even spread of knockout victories as well (9). Since winning the IBF super-middleweight title back in January of 2019, Plant has defended his title three different times against the likes of Caleb Truax (unanimous decision), Vincent Feigenbutz (TKO), and Mike Lee (TKO) is undefeated (4-0) when he is boxing in the state of Nevada.

However, it must be notated that Plant has yet to face an opponent with the track and resume like Álvarez. He is entering this bout as an underdog for the first time since his fight with José Uzcátegui where he won the IBF super-middleweight title initially. Many boxing personalities have been split on the result of this fight with the lion’s share predicting an Álvarez victory, while former professional boxer Andre Ward has predicted a Plant upset.

Prediction

Given the fact that Álvarez has only lost to one fighter in his career (the legendary Mayweather Jr.), many will be hard-pressed to pick Plant as a big underdog here. That said, look for Canelo to make history this weekend and unify all of boxing’s major titles via a unanimous decision.
