Five Californians are excited to see that they are the newest members of the millionaires club in the Golden State. Per a recent report, while the lottery was pleased to have changed the lives of five of its loyal players, it also reminded fans to “have fun and play safely.”  Per the same update, the California Lottery announced several winners of seven-figure prizes from scratch-off tickets. These included a winner who secured a prize just in time for her birthday. In its announcement, the California Lottery announced that five separate players have won prizes of $1 million from the lottery. The most noteworthy example was Latreiece Presentine, a player from Compton who won her prize a day before her birthday.

In this article, SBS will be going over the latest gaming news coming from California, along with a variety of additional notes and analysis you can only find from SBS.

Game winner was a regular participant of lottery games

Covered in the article, Presentine bought her winning $10 50X The Cash ticket at Sweet Time Donuts, 624 E. Compton Blvd. in Compton. This was noted as a shop she regularly visits on her morning commute into Los Angeles. In an interview with lottery officials, Presentine explained that she buys two $10 scratch-off tickets every morning. On the day before her birthday, her luck finally smiled on her as she won the game’s top prize of $1,000,000. “I couldn’t believe it,” Presentine said in the article. “I kept looking and looking at the ticket, and I was like, ‘God, for real God? This is how you are doing to me a day before my birthday?”

Presentine told officials that she immediately called her older brother, who is also an avid scratch-off ticket fan. He did not believe her at first, but was excited about her win once she proved he was not joking. Presentine said that she plans to use the money she won to pay off some debt, buy a new vehicle, and put a down payment on a house

Additional victors confirmed by Lottery authorities

As mentioned, Presentine wasn’t the only big winner. The California Lottery confirmed that four more lucky players claimed prizes of $1 million from the lottery. One of these fortunate lottery enthusiasts was Salamwit Belete, who won a top prize of $1 million from a 50X The Cash ticket. The winning ticket was purchased from 7-Eleven at 7460 Brentwood Blvd. in Brentwood. In the meantime, Johann Guzman won a similar prize from the same game with a ticket that was purchased at the Arco, 988 N. San Antonio Road in Los Altos. Power 10’s, one of the lottery’s other games, also crowned two winners of a prize of $1 million. These included Constantino Chavez, who bought his winning ticket at Florence Donuts, 1242 E. Florence, as well as Miguel Maldonado, who bought his winning ticket at the Arco in Oxnard at 1850 S. Rose Avenue.

While the lottery was pleased to have changed the lives of five of its loyal players, it also reminded fans to have fun and play safely. Indeed, this was another fun occasion for regular players of California Lottery games as well.

Kalshi cleared to continue to operate in state by judge

In other news, in mid-November, Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley (Northern District of California) denied the tribes’ request for a preliminary injunction. The Blue Lake Rancheria, the Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians, and the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians argued that Kalshi’s contracts amounted to illegal Class III gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). They also accused Kalshi of misleading advertising by calling sports betting legal everywhere, which they said violated the Lanham Act.

Judge Corley ruled that the tribes had not demonstrated a likelihood of success on either claim. Regarding the advertising argument, she noted that Kalshi’s claim that “sports betting is legal in all 50 states” could be interpreted as an opinion rather than a factual statement. Making it difficult to pursue under the Lanham Act. The IGRA claim got a deeper look. Corley pointed to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which covers online gambling that crosses state and tribal borders. But she also highlighted that the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) governs Kalshi’s contract, putting the company under the watch of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). That federal oversight, the judge said, means gambling laws don’t bar what Kalshi’s doing.

While the ruling favors Kalshi, Judge Corley acknowledged the tribes’ broader concerns. She recognized that Kalshi’s self-certification of event contracts under the CEA may bypass interstate gambling restrictions designed to protect tribal sovereignty. Nevertheless, she concluded that policy or ethical concerns could not override the court’s legal authority.
