Belfast native and reigning IBO Super Featherweight titleholder Anthony Cacace is set to face ex-WBA Featherweight Champion Leigh Wood this Saturday, May 10, in Wood’s own backyard of Nottingham, England. Standing at 5-foot-10, he holds a three-inch height advantage over Wood, although his reach remains unlisted.
Cacace’s only career setback came in 2017 when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to Martin J Ward in a bout for the British and Commonwealth Super Featherweight titles. Known more for his technical skills than raw power, Cacace has just a 34.8% knockout ratio and has gone to the judges in nine of his last ten fights. Still, his demolition of Cordina showed he’s capable of turning up the power when needed.
In 2019, Cacace claimed the British Super Featherweight crown with a narrow split decision over Sam Bowen. He later defended it successfully against Leon Woodstock. He lifted the IBO strap in 2022 after edging Michael Magnesi via split decision, and retained it in May 2023 with a points win over Damian Wrzesinski before dethroning Cordina. Earlier in his career, he also captured the vacant British Celtic Super Featherweight boxing title in 2015 with a 10th-round TKO of Ronnie Clark.
Leigh Wood’s most recent outing came in October 2023, when he dramatically stopped Josh Warrington in the seventh round despite being behind on all three judges’ scorecards at the time.
Also 36 years old, Wood steps into the ring with a professional record of 28 wins and 3 defeats. This includes 17 knockouts. After turning pro in 2011 following a solid amateur background, he’s accumulated 170 rounds of experience. Wood claimed the WBA (Regular) Featherweight Championship in 2021 with a 12th-round stoppage of Can Xu. He retained it in memorable fashion the following year, knocking out Michael Conlan in the 12th round. The bout was widely hailed as 2022’s Fight of the Year.
He later challenged WBA “Super” Featherweight titleholder Mauricio Lara but was stopped in the seventh round. However, Wood bounced back to win their rematch via unanimous decision—though Lara had been stripped of his title after missing weight. After successfully defeating Warrington, Wood vacated the WBA title.
Throughout his career, Wood has also picked up the British, Commonwealth, British Midlands Area, and WBO European Featherweight belts. His first career loss came in 2015 when Gavin McDonnell stopped him in the sixth round during a fight for the vacant British Super Bantamweight boxing title. He suffered a second defeat in February 2020 via majority decision. This was to Jazza Dickens in a 10-round contest for the WBO European title. His third and most recent loss was the TKO to Lara in early 2023.
Among Wood’s most significant wins are victories over Warrington, Lara (in the rematch), Conlan, and Xu. Known for his punching power, he owns a stoppage rate of 60.7%, having ended eight of his last nine victories inside the distance. Wood stands 5-foot-7 with a 67-inch reach and holds additional wins over the likes of Reece Mould, David Oliver Joyce, Ryan Doyle, Gavin McDonnell, and Isaac Owusu.
Cacace turned heads with his upset stoppage of Joe Cordina. However, his performance against Warrington lacked the same level of threat. Meanwhile, Wood was trailing on the scorecards against Warrington before turning the tide with a stoppage win. He showcased his punching power—a clear advantage over Cacace. However, questions linger about Wood’s durability, especially given his knockout losses. He’ll be stepping into the ring after a lengthy layoff while also moving up in weight.
