Perhaps one of the more notable and marketed films of 2024, Wicked: Part 1 is causing quite a stir across the globe. Per a recent report and update from Bovada, in collaboration with media outlet Pop Crave, the website shared some new betting markets related to the film. As the article says, it’s about to get “a whole lot greener” after the Charli XCX “BRAT” pandemic that ruled the globe, as one of the most anticipated films of the year. Wicked: Part 1 was finally released in theaters on November 22nd, 2024 with an ensemble cast. This includes pop songstress Ariana Grande-Butera, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, & Ethan Slater among others in a retelling of the classic “Wizard of Oz” story following two characters: Elphaba and Glinda.

For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from the latest gaming news coming from Bovada along with some additional notes and thoughts regarding the site and beyond.

Wicked receiving years of anticipation for its release

Also covered in the article, the hype surrounding the film has whizzed up since the casting’s original announcement back in 2021. It has been more than two years since the film’s actual theatrical release. Deep-rooted pop culture fans know this announcement became a major full circle moment for Grande, as she landed her dream acting role, as the star has been a musical theater fanatic. This is of course evident, the article notes, with her debut “Yours Truly” album track, “Popular Song” derived from the musical track of a similar name.

While the film has already been released, the team at Bovada shared its coverage on the current Wicked betting odds surrounding the bewitching film. Of course, the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter can fluctuate with more reviews so the dust has not quite settled on how well overall the film will be received. Per the site, the Wicked Popcornmeter odds are as follows; Over 89%: -120 while 89% or Under also yields you -120. As the article notes, these odds are of course subject to change.

Attributes relating to over 90% are compelling for the film

Noted on the article, many factors leading up to the film’s Popcornmeter freshness includes Ariana Grande revealing that she was bestowed the blessing by theater staple Kristin Chenoweth to play Glinda, who she herself played the same role on Broadway in the early 2000’s. Additionally, in a recent Sentimental Men Podcast episode, Grande talked about the intimate moment “Oh my God, I was hoping this would happen. I love you and I trust you with it baby girl. Just do you thing, just do you thing … you are gonna backdoor them!”

With nods like this, both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera will be campaigning toward the big leagues as the best lead and supporting actress categories according to The Hollywood Reporter. Additionally, the film is gearing up to surpass one of the more influential recent films, “Barbie” starring Margot Robbie as it is estimated to surpass it by opening weekend

Wicked could face some critical headwinds in its release

While buzz on the film has certainly been positive, not everyone is sold on the overall merits of the film. For instance, the film is being split between two parts with the first releasing last month and the second part premiering exactly a year later. Both production and cast chose to split the story into two parts to fully delve moviegoers into the mesmerizing and dazzling world of “Wicked.” With it they are investing heavy thought into the complex relationship between the characters, avoiding any musical number removals and scenes for the play’s fanatics.

Although the decision makes sense to the plot, this could go one of two ways as it could make average consumers feel as though the wait time for the next installment seems unnecessary. Like having certain scenes of the film feel like a drag when it could have been more concise. Another aspect that could lead to this betting odd is that both of the actresses’ recent Popcornmeter ratings have not exceeded 89%. Although Grande’s role in “Don’t Look Up” was minor, the film received 78% whereas Erivo’s 2023 film “Luther: The Fallen Sun” bordered the opposing odds at a rating of 85%.

Although the future of this outcome can go one of two ways, if you are an avid fan of the “Wicked” universe or a pop culture fan, you should check out the film the article says. Additionally, the report points out that checking out this intriguing betting market could add to the fun as well
