First Matchup Spotlight: Taro Daniel vs. Daniel Evans

What to look for from: Taro Daniel

Daniel is coming off a straight sets victory over Emilio Nava in the first round of the tournament where he looked on top of his game. The veteran 29-year-old from Japan was able to win 6-4 and 6-3 and is now cruising into this second-round matchup with the top seed. Currently ranked just outside of the ATP top 100, a victory here would certainly boost his stock in the world standings quite a bit. Daniel does boast an undefeated record over Novak Djokovic (1-0) so he has shown he can tangle with the world’s best.

What to look for from: Daniel Evans

The number one seed in the tournament, Evans is riding a hot streak in his career and is coming off being ranked inside the top 25 (No. 22) for the first time in his pro career in August. With a first-round bye to start the tournament, the 32-year-old should be well-rested and ready to take on Daniel. In 2022, Evans put together a record of 4-4 at major championships and was able to notch personal career best at the Australian Open (third round) and French Open (second round). For this year’s campaign, he has put together a total winning record of 21-20 and will be aiming for his second ATP title in San Diego.

Prediction: This will be a hard-fought battle but take the well-rested Evans in this one.

Second Matchup Spotlight: Mackenzie McDonald vs. Jenson Brooksby

What to look for from: Mackenzie McDonald

On the other side of the bracket, McDonald is slated to tangle with the second overall seed in the tournament. However, the 27-year-old UCLA graduate is not someone to take lightly. Coming off a career-best ranking in August of this year at No. 48 in the world, the resident of Orlando, Florida has also been able to achieve strong performances in various majors this year as well. This includes the third round of the French Open and also the fourth round of the Australian Open, albeit in 2021. After making his top 50 debut earlier this year, McDonald can certainly make the case to stay there with a strong performance in SoCal.

What to look for from: Jenson Brooksby

Our final competitor spotlight is also the youngest athlete on this list at only 21 years of age. With a singles record of 37-26 (58.7%), Brooksby also has the highest winning percentage of the featured athletes in this article. After a first round bye, the Californian should be well-prepared for his match against McDonald on his home state soil. Indeed this should be an exciting matchup between two Californians that have a bright future in the sport. After being ranked as high as No. 33 in the world earlier this year, Brooksby has slid a bit back to No. 37. Regardless, the 21-year-old is a flamethrower on the court and one to watch.

Prediction: This will be a must-watch clash but look for the young upstart Brooksby to steal this one away from McDonald
