The 2026 edition of the Australian Open begins on January 12, 2026. The high-stakes Grand Slam tennis tournament runs through February 1. While the prize purses for the event have not yet been announced, last year’s Men’s winner, Jannik Sinner, took home $3.5 million (AUD) and the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. The runner-up, Alexander Zverev, earned $1.9 million.
Sinner is looking to win his third straight Australian Open in 2026. The last player to win three consecutive titles was Novak Djokovic, from 2019 to 2021. Sinner is currently the No. 2 player in the Men’s ATP rankings, where he trails No. 1 ranked Carlos Alcaraz.
The 2026 Australian Open, which takes place at Melbourne Park, marks the 114th edition of the event and the 58th since the Open Era began. One hundred twenty-eight players start the Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic, who also won the event in 2023, looks to add to his record of 10 Australian Open titles in Melbourne.
The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam event on the tennis calendar for 2026.

In September 2024, Jannik Sinner won his second career Grand Slam title in New York City, becoming the first Italian man ever to win the U.S. Open. The then-23-year-old finished the 2024 tennis season with an impressive 73-6 overall record. He entered 2025 as the No. 1 ranked ATP men’s player.
In 2025, Sinner opened the year with a second consecutive win in the Australian Open, with a win over Alexander Zverev. He then made the final of the French Open, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner got back in the win column at Wimbledon, beating defending champion Alcaraz, before falling in the final of the fourth Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, to Alcaraz.
Sinner has an 88.1 percent winning percentage in 2025, falling from his remarkable 92.4 percent winning percentage in 2024. Before 2024-2025, Sinner’s best winning percentage was 80.6. The 24-year-old has a 37-5 record in 2025.
Carlos Alcaraz has already claimed four major championships in his young career, but has never advanced past the quarter-finals in Australia. In fact, prior to his win at the 2025 U.S. Open, the 22-year-old Spaniard hadn’t won a hard-court grand slam since the 2022 U.S. Open. In 2025, Novak Djokovic eliminated Alcaraz in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open (4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4).
Alcaraz and Sinner are the top two young players in tennis today, and fans will look for them to continue their run of facing each other in a Grand Slam final when the 2026 season begins. The duo finished the 2025 season by playing in the final three Grand Slam events of the year, with Alcaraz winning two of those, the French Open and U.S. Open, while Sinner prevented Alcaraz from winning a third straight Wimbledon title.
Alcaraz has a magnificent 91.04 winning percentage in 2025, going 61-6.
Alcaraz needs a win in Australia to complete a career Grand Slam.
Novak Djokovic did not win a Grand Slam in 2024 or 2025, but he did reach the semi-finals in each of the four Grand Slam events in 2025. The last time he reached a Grand Slam final was 2024 at Wimbledon when he lost to Alcaraz.
The 38-year-old looks to get back to a Grand Slam final in 2025, but to do so he’s most likely going to have to defeat Sinner or Alcaraz before the final, which could prove to be a problem for Djokovic.
Djokovic, who is the No. 4 player in the rankings, has a 31-10 record in 2025, with a winning percentage of 75.6.
No player has reached the Australian Open final as often as Djokovic with 10 appearances. More impressive is that the he has won each time he has made it to the final of the event. The next highest number of appearances in the Australian Open final is Roger Federer with seven (6-1).
