Mexico opened up its defense of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup title with a 3-2 win over the Dominican Republic in the first game of Group play. The club faces Suriname in its next outing. The club is part of Group A, which also includes Costa Rica.
Mexico comes into the event following a 2-1 win over Panama to claim its first CONCACAF Nations League tournament victory. That win prevented the United States from winning three straight.
Mexico might not have its deepest team because the FIFA Club World Cup is going on at the same time as this event, but the club has players Fulham’s Raul Jiménez and AC Milan’s Santiago Giménez, who will loom large in this event. Jiménez scored one of the team’s three goals against the Dominican Republic, giving him his 40th goal for the Mexican national team, which puts him third all-time in that stat.
Mexico started the first game of group play a little slow, but don’t look for that to happen for the rest of the tournament.
The United States and Mexico have owned this event since it began in 1991. Except for 2000, when Canada won, the US or Mexico have hoisted the Cup at the end of every other tournament. Mexico has won nine times, while the US has earned seven titles. Neither team has won back-to-back titles since Mexico did so in 2009 and 2011. Since 2013, the clubs have alternated the title, each winning three times.
The US, part of Group D along with Haiti, Saudi Arabia, and Trinidad & Tobago, opened play with a 5-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago. They play their next Group game on June 19 against Saudi Arabia, who could be a sleeper pick to win this event. That game will be a telling one for the US squad.
The USMNT will be without most of its top European players for this event, which will likely hurt the club. The players to watch are Brian White, Diego Luna, and Jack McGlynn. Coach Mauricio Pochettino must have the team dialed in for the Saudi Arabia game.
With the United States being a bit shaky heading into the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Canada could be the surprise team this year. A part of Group B with Honduras, El Salvador, and Curacao, the club opened the Group stage with a 6-0 win over Honduras. The team’s next game is Saturday when they face Curacao.
Head coach Jesse Marsch leads the Canadian team into this event. knowing they are the host team for the 2026 World Cup. Winning the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup with that event on the horizon would be a statement for Team Canada, which comes into the event with a very deep roster.
The players to watch for Canada are Jonathan David and Promise David. Five different players scored in the team’s win over Honduras.
This will be the year that Canada gets back on top. The team has not won the CONCACAF Gold Cup since 2000, but they will end the drought in 2025 and carry the title with them when they host the 2026 World Cup.
The betting pick is that Team Canada wins the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
