Returning to defend her crown is the defending women’s singles champion, Aryna Sabalenka who captured her first-ever Grand Slam title at the 2023 Australian Open. Her top competition, and the favorite in this tournament, is Iga Swiatek, winner of the 2023 French Open and also the Tour Finals last year. Meanwhile, another athlete to watch out for is Elena Rybakina, who is currently ranked as the No. 3 overall player in the world and has captured six career titles in her young career. Finally, 2023 U.S. Open winner Coco Gauff rounds out this quartet of favorites to win in Australia. Gauff had a fantastic 2023 and is still scratching the surface of her potential at just 19 years of age.

A four-time Grand Slam tournament winner (three times at the French Open and once at the U.S.), Swiatek definitely has earned the ranking of top player in the world at times. Moreover, in addition to her Grand Slam success, she has won a total of 17 singles titles, including the 2023 WTA Finals last year. Known for her all-court playing style, she has won numerous WTA fan awards and is a sensational force on the court. Only 22, she has a lot of career left in front of her and while she has achieved a ton of success, she has never locked down an Australian Open title. Her best performance to date was at the 2022 event where she made the semifinals of the tournament. Her overall record at the Australian Open is 15-5 and she advanced to the fourth round of the event last year.
Last year was a fantastic one for Sabalenka at Grand Slam events as she set career-highs at all four major tournaments. In addition to winning the Australian Open, she made the semifinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon. Moreover, she also set a career-best by advancing to the finals of the U.S. Open as well in 2023. A player with a very aggressive style of play, the Belarusian star has a sensational serve thanks to her height that helps her accumulate a high volume of winners in matches. In fact, before last year, she had never made more than two semifinals in one year so perhaps in 2023 she has turned the corner in her career. Moreover, in 2024 she won three different titles and accumulated a record of 23-3 in Grand Slam tennis events.
As noted above, the 24-year-old is recognized as a top three player in the world as of this article’s writing. Rybakina had a great season in 2023 as well, winning two WTA 1000 titles at the 2023 Indian Wells Open and also the 2023 Italian Open. An athlete with an excellent serve who can generate high-powered groundstrokes, she has one Grand Slam title in her career. Moreover, she had a career-best showing last year at the 2023 Australian Open, advancing all the way until the final round against Sabalenka, but fell short in the championship match. That said, her second-best Grand Slam tournament, in terms of winning percentage, is the Australian Open where she has accrued an overall record of 10-4.
Our last athlete showcase, Gauff is a player that has captured the American audience thanks to her mass appeal and of course, sensational game. An accomplished winner at a young age, she has won seven WTA Tour singles titles, including the 2023 U.S. Open, and eight doubles titles as well. Moreover, she has been ranked as high as the No. 3 player in the world in singles and also a world No. 1 in doubles tennis. In the past, she has twice advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open which is her career-best in the tournament, and did so most recently at the 2023 event.
