In early 2025, it looked like the race to be the next mayor of New York City would come down to Andrew Cuomo, Adrienne Adams, or Eric Adams, with Cuomo being the overwhelming favorite to win the primary and overall election. However, Zohran Mamdani, who was a long shot at +1000 in March, won the Democratic primary, cruising to victory with 56.2 percent of the vote over Cuomo, who picked up 43.8 of the votes.
Mamdani’s victory shook up the race. The 33-year-old Mamdani is now the favorite to become the next mayor of New York City. With his primary win, current mayor Eric Adams has announced that he is running as an independent. Former governor Cuomo is expected to also announce his candidacy as an independent in the coming days. Curtis Sliwa is the Republican nominee. He ran unopposed in the primary.
Adams defeated Sliwa in 2021 with 753,801 votes to 312,385.

Zohran Mamdani was polling well behind Andrew Cuomo early in the race to win the Democratic primary. Still, the democratic socialist surged ahead of the former governor leading up to the election and cruised to victory.
Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens, used a combination of charm, social media messaging, and motivated volunteers to get his message to the people of New York. A visible figure across the city in the days leading to the primary, Mamdani struck a chord with his message of free buses, child care, and a rent freeze. Mamdani simply connected better with the residents of the city, especially younger voters.
Mamdani has some plans that some may find “too progressive,” such as building 200,000 units of affordable housing and city-run grocery stores, but he has several months to work on his messaging on these fronts.
As of now, Mamdani is an overwhelming favorite to win the election for mayor of New York City in November.
Eric Adams dropped out of the race to win the Democratic primary early. At the time he did so, the current mayor was not a popular candidate. “New Yorkers are just very unhappy with the state of affairs in the city itself, and this goes beyond any legal problems,” said Patrick Egan, a political science professor at New York University.
According to an October 2024 Siena poll, 51 percent of city residents felt New York was on the wrong path. Thirty-five percent of those polled had a favorable feeling. Crime, immigration, and homelessness were the biggest concerns of city residents in that poll. Adams has not made much progress, if any when it comes to violent crime or overall offenses.
What Adams does have now that Mamdani is the Democratic candidate is the support of conservative business people who might balk at the progressive ideas of Mamdani.
Adams is a long shot to win a second term as New York’s mayor as an independent.
Andrew Cuomo did not campaign as hard as Mamdani during the primary. He seemed to trust that his name recognition and his run as governor of New York would be enough to hold off the young upstart. He found out that he was very wrong.
While Cuomo has not declared that he will run as an independent, it is likely he will do so.
When he left the governor’s office, he was not popular. At the time, Cuomo faced multiple allegations of sexual harassment. Also, a report by the state comptroller said Cuomo’s health department, “was not transparent in its reporting of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes.” The report added that the department “understated the number of deaths at nursing homes by as much as 50%” during some points of the pandemic.” The former governor also faced scrutiny over a $5 million book deal he signed to write a memoir on COVID-19.
On the positive side, Cuomo never faced court charges over the sexual harassment accusations. Further, an investigation by the Department of Justice inspector general into his handling of COVID-19 found that New York and other Democratic-run states like New York and New Jersey “were targeted by President Donald Trump’s Department of Justice with targeted leaks about the probes shortly before the 2020 election.”
Cuomo had strong support in some sections of the city, but his negatives might outweigh his positives to younger and more progressive voters.
