If you are serious about horse racing, then you cannot miss betting on the Breeders’ Cup. The world championship races feature two days of lucrative opportunities to play the best horses in all divisions of racing. At stake are purses totaling $34 million over the series of races. One of the most exciting and historic of the Breeders’ Cup races is the Breeders’ Cup Turf event, which takes place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Del Mar Racetrack in San Diego, CA.
The total purse for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Turf is $5 million. The winner takes home $2.60 million of that purse, while the second-place finisher earns $850,000.
A race at 1 1/2 miles on grass, the Breeders’ Cup Turf race is the longest competition of the world championship series. The race is limited to 14 starters. Last year’s winner, Rebel’s Romance out of Ireland, was the oldest victor in the history of the race at six. He also captured first place in the race in 2022. He did not compete in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Turf race, which was won by Auguste Rodin, also out of Ireland. Rebels Romance is among the betting favorites to win the race in 2025.
With the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Turf a few months away, we look at the early betting favorites for this year’s race.

Competing out of Ireland, Ombudsman had a fantastic year in 2024 as a three-year-old. He started four races and won all of them. He began his four-year-old season in late May with a runner-up finish to Almaqam at the 2025 Brigadier Gerard Stakes. Ombudsman followed that with a win at the 2025 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Ascot Racecourse a few weeks later. Then, in early July, the John & Thady Gosden-trained horse finished second at the 2025 Coral-Eclipse. In his most recent outing, Ombudsman picked up a win on August 20 at the 2025 Juddmonte International Stakes, beating Delacroix, who had defeated Ombudsman in their previous meeting.
In eight starts, Ombudsman has won $2.216 million in purses, with the majority of those winnings accrued in 2025.
A three-year-old filly out of Ireland, Minnie Hauk is having a great run in 2025, starting four races and winning each outing. The Aidan O’Brien-trained horse started two races in 2024, finishing first and second in those outings. O’Brien has the most wins as a trainer in the history of the Breeders’ Cup Turf with seven. His most recent victory was in 2023 when Auguste Rodin placed first.
Minnie Hauk has three 1 1/2 mile races on turf this year, winning each of those outings. Her most recent victory came in late August when she won at Yorkshire Oaks.
This Breeders’ Cup Turf race will be a step in competition for Minnie Hauk, but the early betting odds indicate she will be in the running for another 2025 victory.
In 2024, Rebel’s Romance joined High Chaparral (2002, 2003) and Conduit (2008, 2009) as a two-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf race. Now, three years after his first win in this race, the seven-year-old looks to become the first horse to win the race three times.
Rebel’s Romance has 19 career victories in 28 starts and has pulled in over $14.1 million in winnings. He has four wins in six starts this year, all of which have come on turf. In his most recent start, Rebel’s Romance placed first in the 1 1/2 mile 2025 Grosser Preis von Berlin.
He is expected to race in the 2025 Canadian International in October before tackling the Breeders’ Cup Turf race.
Rebel’s Romance won the Eclipse Award for champion male turf horse last season after wins at Dubai Sheema Classic, the Champions & Chater Cup (G1) in Hong Kong, the Preis von Europa (G1) in Germany, in addition to his Breeders’ Cup Turf victory.
