The big news in MotoGP circles is that Marc Marquez might be out for the rest of the 2025 MotoGP season. Marquez, the eight-time MotoGP world champion, was enjoying one of the best runs of his legendary career when he crashed on the opening lap of the recent Indonesian Grand Prix. The 32-year-old sustained a coracoid fracture and ligament damage in that crash and underwent surgery not long after the crash. Marquez could return during the 2025 MotoGP season, but with four races remaining, including this weekend’s 2025 Australian Grand Prix, his return seems unlikely. Marquez has a massive 183-point lead over his younger brother, Alex Marquez, in the standings. Marc had won 11 races before his crash, including seven straight victories earlier in the season.
With Marquez out of the running in Australia, he will not repeat as race winner. Marquez won the Australian GP in 2024, beating Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia. Bagnaia, who finished second overall last year, will compete in Australia. Martin, last year’s world champion, is out of the race after suffering an injury during the opening lap of the Japanese Grand Prix. Fermin Aldegeur, who is coming off his first win of 2025, capturing the checkered flag at the Indonesian GP, is the betting favorite in Australia.
This week’s race, the Liqui Moly Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, takes place on the Phillip Island circuit in Ventnor, Australia. The course is 4.45 km long with 12 total corners.

The last rookie MotoGP rider to win back-to-back races was Marc Marquez in 2013, when he won four straight races on his way to his first world championship. The 20-year-old Fermin Aldeguer has a chance to get two wins in a row following his victory at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
Aldeguer, who hails from Spain and rides the No. 54 Ducati for BK8 Gresini Racing, is the betting favorite heading into the 2025 Australian GP. One reason he holds that distinction is because he won the most recent race; another, more important reason is that he won the Moto2 race on this track last year, one of his three victories during the 2024 Moto2 season.
Aldeguer has not been very consistent this year, with just three podiums, including his win, but with his success here, he also finished third and fourth in Australia in Moto2 races. He’s a rider to consider when betting on a win or podium finish.
Alex Marquez has been on the MotoGP circuit since 2020, driving for Ducati since 2023. The younger Marquez started every race in 2024, finishing the season in eighth place, his best-ever placement as a MotoGP rider. Marquez did not win a race between 2020 and 2024. He ended that run in April when he placed first at the Spanish GP. Marquez picked up his second win of the year at the Catalan GP. He has a two third place finishes and a sixth since then,
Marquez might only have two victories this year, but he has been incredibly consistent, finishing in second place in six races. What makes things very interesting for Marquez is that with his brother out of action, one must look at how close Alex has come to dominating this year. He has finished in second place 15 times this year across sprints and GPs.
Marquez has completed the Australian GP twice as a MotoGP rider, placing ninth in 2023 and 15th last year.
The two-time MotoGP world champ, and runner-up in 2021 and 2024, Francesco Bagnaia, heads into Australia as the No. 3 racer in 2025, trailing second-place Alex Marquez by 88 points.
Bagnaia had a fantastic year in 2024, winning 11 races, including the final three contests of the season. Despite that run, he finished 10 points behind Jorge Martin in the standings. Bagnaia started the 2025 season strong, winning one race and finishing no lower than fourth in the first five contests. He followed that with a 16th-place finish in France and a retirement in the British GP. Since then, Bagnaia one win (Japan) and three third-place finishes. His win in Japan was bookended by retirements at the San Marino and Rimini Riviera GP and the recent Indonesian GP.
Bagnaia has raced 10 times on the Phillips Island Circuit, never winning, but landing on the podium three times, including last year when he placed third. His best MotoGP finish came in 2023 when he was runner-up to Johann Zarco.
Fermin Aldeguer has confidence and momentum on his side heading into this week’s MotoGP race. With his win in Indonesia and his performance on the Phillips Circuit while competing on the Moto2 circuit, look for him to pick up back-to-back wins in his rookie MotoGP season.
The betting pick is Fermin Aldeguer to win the 2025 Australian GP.
