If you are serious about horse racing, then you cannot miss betting on the Breeders’ Cup. The world championship races feature two days of lucrative opportunities to play the best horses in all divisions of racing. One of the most exciting and historic of the Breeders’ Cup races is the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which happens Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Del Mar Racetrack.
The total purse for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic is $7 million. The winner takes home $3.64 million of that purse, while the second-place finisher earns $1.19 million. The prize for 7th through 10th place is $70,000.
A race at 1 ⅛ miles on the dirt, the race always features the best dirt route fillies ages three and up. Last year’s winner, Sierra Leone defeated Fierceness by 1 ½ lengths to win the 41st running of the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Both horses are in the mix for the 2025 edition of the race.
With the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic a few months away, we look at the early betting favorites for this year’s race.

It’s not a surprise to see Sovereignty as the early betting favorite to win the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic. After winning the Kentucky Derby, trainer Bill Mott elected to keep Sovereignty out of the Preakness. “We want to do what’s best for the horse,” Mott told reporters at Churchill Downs. “Of course, you always think about a Triple Crown, and that’s not something we’re not going to think about.”
Sovereignty then went on to win at the Belmont Stakes, which of course led to questions about Mott deciding not to participate in the Preakness, the second of the three Triple Crown races. Mott said he did not regret his decision.
Three-year-old Sovereignty is in the running for Horse of the Year, and a win at the Breeders’ Cup Classic would help that bid in a big way.
Just as Sovereignty deserves to be the betting favorite for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic, Journalism deserves to be in the second spot in the early odds. Journalism finished second to Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont races, while winning the Preakness. In his first race since the Triple Crown outings, Journalism won the Haskell Invitational.
Journalism has a solid chance to win the Breeders’ Cup this year, but he has his work cut out for him in making bettors believe he can get the best of Sovereignty this year.
The length of this race is good for Fierceness, who seems to do better on tracks that are longer than a mile. Another thing to consider is that Fierceness finished as the runner-up in last year’s edition of the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The four-year-old took a six-month break after last year’s Breeders’ Cup, returning to action in May for the 2025 Alysheba, where he beat Most Wanted for the win. In his next outing, the 2025 Met Mile. Fierceness finished as the runner-up to Raging Torrent. The next likely race for Fierceness is the 2025 Whitney.
Owner Mike Repole said he had three goals in mind for Fierceness in 2025, the first two were wins at Alysheba and the Met Mile, the third is a victory at the Breeders’ Cup.
