Certainly an engaging and dramatic contest, the U.S. Presidential Election race for 2024 will come to a crescendo on November 5th which is Election Day in the U.S. On one side of the race is Donald Trump who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021 and is an extremely well-known businessman and media personality. Noted in some reports, Trump has continued to dominate the Republican Party and is their nominee again during this election cycle. Opposing him this time around will not be his usual foil, current President Joe Biden, but rather Biden’s current vice president, Kamala Harris who is the 2024 Democratic Party nominee. With her current role as VP, she is recognized as the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history, and from 2017 to 2021, she represented California in the Senate.

For this report, SBS will be going over what to look for from the latest election news coming out of the United States along with more notes and info at SBS and beyond.

What to look for from: Donald Trump

A candidate with an accomplished past, but also a controversial lightning rod in other circles, Trump needs little introduction. After his father made him the president of the family real estate business in 1971, he renamed it the Trump Organization and reoriented the company into various ventures including casinos, golf courses, hotels, and more. That said, as noted in some profiles of the former president, he and his businesses have been plaintiffs or defendants in more than 4,000 legal actions, including six business bankruptcies. Moreover, Trump is the only U.S. president to have been impeached twice and is also the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime. Regardless, Trump’s support of his campaign has grown since Harris was selected to run against him.

Noted on some websites, the former President is currently ahead in polling over Harris. Per the popular statistical analysis website, 538, Trump is predicted to win over Harris 51 times out of 100 in their simulations of the 2024 presidential election. According to an expanded graph on the website out of 1,000 simulations, the former president is victorious 506 times in this scenario

Per the website, the change in the candidate’s fortunes came after a “drip-drip-drip of polls” showed the race tightening across the northern and Sun Belt battleground states. For example, in the 538 forecasts of the popular vote in Pennsylvania, the race has shifted from a 0.6-point lead for Harris on October 1st to a 0.2-point lead for Trump. Meanwhile, in Michigan, Harris’ steady 1.8 lead has dwindled to now just 0.4 points.

What to look for from: Kamala Harris

In addition to her other roles, her official bio notes, Harris was the attorney general for California prior to serving in the Senate. Per one report, Harris sought the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination in 2019 but withdrew from the race before the primaries. Biden then selected her as his running mate, and their ticket defeated the incumbent ticket of Trump and then-vice president Mike Pence. Presiding over an evenly split Senate upon entering office, Harris played a crucial role as president of the Senate, casting more tie-breaking votes than any other vice president. Additionally, though the public had an unfavorable view of Harris as vice president, setting a record low, her public image has improved after Biden withdrew his candidacy for re-election. Most notably, her approval rating rose 13% among Democrats.

Current polling metrics have suggested that Harris has fallen behind Trump since an initial surge once she gained the Democratic Party nomination from President Biden. For instance, in states like Nevada, the Republicans have seen a strong surge of early voting support in a state that has turned blue in the last handful of election cycles per local sources in the region. Of course, there is still time for the Democrats to make up this shortfall, but it would appear that some of the initial battleground states are seeing a “red wave” of initial support.

Presidential Prediction:

In a hard-fought battle, Donald Trump (-180) is the selected pick to take back the presidency in 2024. This election will perhaps be as close as the battle back in 2016 when Trump won the electoral vote while his opponent, Hillary Clinton, won the popular vote.
