For this article, SBS will be going over the latest updates coming from Maryland regarding gaming and also more notes about the overall news coming from the Old Line State.

Maryland gaming revenues contribute to education fund

As noted in the article and also in this space in the past, the contribution number of $74,449,247 helps give back to various causes in the state. Of this total, contributions to the Education Trust Fund totaled $53,663,328, which is a 4.2% increase, or $2,174,989, compared to May 2023. The casino revenues also support local communities, Maryland’s horse racing industry, and small, minority, and women-owned businesses.

Casino revenues shared with variety of state causes

Also noted in the article is the “substantial revenue” generated by these casinos not only supports the state’s Education Trust Fund but also benefits local jurisdictions and communities where the casinos operate. Additionally, the funds assist Maryland’s horse racing industry and contribute to the growth of small, minority- and women-owned businesses across the state. Of course, the state has also made it a priority to channel a portion of these funds back to education programs across the region that would support the public school system. Moreover, there are a variety of initiatives in the state that support education on gambling and provide services to those who are having issues with gambling and related activities.

In other news, Betr, an online gaming outlet, has received initial approval from the Maryland Lottery to receive a sports betting license in the state per another article. The Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission will have to approve before the firm receives a license. In January, Betr announced market access deals for online sportsbooks and casinos in Pennsylvania and for online sportsbooks in Colorado and Kentucky. Per its website, Betr Picks is a “new way to enjoy fantasy sports where you can pick MORE or LESS for your favorite players’ stats to win up to 1000x” the player’s entry. The company is focused on “disrupting legacy gaming and legacy media” but still needs some more approval from certain government outlets in the state.
