2019 MLB World Series: Could The Astros Claim a Clean Sweep?

2019 MLB World Series: Could The Astros Claim a Clean Sweep?

The 2019 World Series odds predict the Houston Astros (-215) will run out worthy winners against the Washington Nationals (+175) with a clean sweep also possible.

This is only the second time the World Series has been contested by two expansion teams and each will be doing everything in their power to become the 2019 World Series champions.

    • The Houston Astros are -215 favorites to win the 2019 MLB World Series by any score
    • The Washington Nationals are priced at +175 to be crowned champions
    • Houston Astros have +650 odds to win the World Series by a 4-0 score.
    • The last three World Series winners won more than 100 games during the regular season. Astros went 107-55 this season, Nationals went 93-69
    • Odds suggest there will be six (+185) or seven (+200) games played in this series.

Arguments for an Astros World Series Victory (-215)

The Houston Astros are many experts' World Series picks and it is so easy to see why. Look at the Astros' roster and find a weak link. You will either fail in your quest to do so or will have to be hyper-critical of a player to label them as weak.

Astros easily have the best starting pitcher in the entire MLB. Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander are incredible pitchers and should one of them have an unlikely off game, Zack Greinke is a more than capable understudy. The trio were a combined 49-12 this season showing how deadly the trio is.

The World Series creates massive pressure for the players but the Astros have reached the playoffs in four of the last five season so know how to handle the pressure cooker of the games. They also managed to rack up 114 victories in their 173 games, including postseason, and that is quite incredible.

Offensively, Astros can call upon Jose Altuve to drive them forwards. Altuve has been in the all-star team six times and is currently hitting .349 in the playoffs after a solid season of .298 average and 31 home runs. The rest of the roster has six other players who have managed at least 20 home runs.

No wonder Bovada thinks this will be a one-sided affair.

Arguments for a Nationals World Series Victory (+175)

If you like to back a baseball team based on current form them you need to bet on the Washington Nationals to win the 2019 World Series. Nobody in their right mind would have predicted the Nationals would win 93 regular season games after they went 19-31 by the end of May

Only three other teams have managed to reach the World Series after being majorly below .500. Manager Dave Martinez managed to work some magic in the Nationals' locker room because the ended the regular season with 93-69 (.574) record, meaning they won 74 of their next 112 games, a similar pace to the Astros' overall record.

That form has continued and Nationals are 6-0 in their last six games, including sweeping St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, doing so while outscoring the Cardinals 20-6.

Everyone knows the Astros were the best side during the MLB regular season, but the Nationals are definitely the side to beat on current form.

Imagine being 12 games under .500 in May 24th and then becoming the 2019 World Series champions, it is a massive story waiting to happen, and why many punters will be backing the Nationals to win at +175.

2019 World Series Odds: Astros To Win, But Not Sweep

Four-nil demolitions are super rare in World Series games and we do not think it will be a 4-0 clean sweep for the Astros. Bovada price this at +650 with a Nationals clean sweep weighing in at +1500. Neither will happen.

The best value looks to be in the Astros winning 4-2 or 4-3. The former comes in at +300 with the latter +400. We just cannot see how the Nationals are not going to win at least one of two of the World Series games, even if we think the Astros will be worthy winners overall.

This makes us want to take the -175 offered on their being over 5.5 games in the World Series, with the +185 on their being six games exactly (it is +200 for seven games) also looking tempting.

You can also find value in backing Astros' Gerrit Cole as being crowned the World Series MVP. Cole is currently the +800 joint-second favorite with Alex Bregman to be the MVP; Jose Altuve is the +700 favorite.

Cole has look unhittable throughout the season and could be the difference between these two sides. The Yankees made him look mortal in the ALCS but Cole still has 358 punchouts this year, the most going into a World Series since Randy Johnson with 419 in 2001.
